Scott misses PGA's FedExCup playoffs for the first time

Australian golf star Adam Scott is wondering where it all went wrong after missing the mega-money FedExCup playoffs for the first time.

Despite a flying finish to the PGA Tour's Wyndham Championship in North Carolina, Scott fell one shot shy of making the $US75 million ($A114 million) playoffs starting this week.

Scott closed with a seven-under 63 to tie for seventh with countryman Cam Davis as Lucas Glover scored an emotion-charged two-shot win over fellow American Russell Henley.

Scott wound up in 72nd position in the season-long points standings, with only the top 70 players progressing to the FedEx St Jude Championship in Memphis beginning on Thursday.

The former world No.1 and US veteran Matt Kuchar had the distinction of being the only two players to have qualified for the playoffs every year since their inception in 2007.

Now Kuchar is the last man standing after making it once more, while Scott is left to lament blowing a superb five-under-par start in Greensboro with rounds of 71-69.

"I didn't play well on Friday and Saturday tee to green, didn't feel amazing," he said.

"I wish I knew what I was doing, but I don't.

"I'm actually getting to the point where I've got to put that stuff aside and not play to keep a streak of playing playoffs going, but play to win stuff, not just be there to make the numbers up."

Davis and revitalised former world No.1 Jason Day are the only two Australians who will feature in the FedExCup playoffs this year.

Day had already secured his entry before sitting out the final event of the regular season, while Davis's final round 66 was enough for the Sydneysider to climb from 69th to 62nd in the standings.

Scott wasn't the biggest name to miss out.

Two-time PGA Championship winner Justin Thomas fell short by one spot after sharing 11th at the Wyndham Championship at 11 under, one stroke behind Scott and Davis.

Needing a birdie on the 18th hole, Thomas's pitch from 100 feet short of the hole smacked off the base of the pin and settled inches away as the one-time world No.1 fell to the ground in disbelief.

Glover won at 20 under after closing with a 68 at Sedgefield Country Club, with Henley (69) sharing second at 18 under with Korean Byeong Hun An (67).

Third-round co-leader Billy Horschel faltered with a Sunday 72 to finish fourth at 16 under as the day belonged to 43-year-old Glover.

The 2009 US Open champion now has five PGA Tour wins separated by 18 years, and there might not have been another except for his switch to a long putter - a move inspired by Scott.

He had been battling the yips, but made every important putt this week.

Glover soared from 112th place in the FedEx Cup points standings to No.49.

If he can stay in the top 50 after next week, he will be eligible for all the signature $US20 million ($A30 million) events in 2024.
