Cam Davis has earned a great chance of a second PGA Tour victory after shooting a brilliant seven-under-par 65 third round at the Fortinet Championship in Napa, California.
The 28-year-old Australian made seven birdies, roaring home with four over the last four holes, in a flawless display to be tied second, two shots behind American leader Sahith Theegala.
World No.49 Davis earned a spot in Sunday's final pairing with Theegala at Silverado Resort as he seeks to add to his breakthrough win on the tour at the 2021 Rocket Mortgage Classic.
World No.37 Theegala, 25, boosted his quest for a maiden win by posting a 67 to get to 17-under after a season with seven top-10 finishes.
Davis was tied with two-time major champion Justin Thomas (65) and South Korea's S.H. Kim (69) while Matt Kuchar (65) and Eric Cole (68) were a further shot back.
Having led the tournament after a first round 63, Australian Lucas Herbert continued to slip after a 71 to be tied 28th, 10 shots behind Theegala.
Davis was grateful not to be among the many players forced to battle for their tour status at this first stop on the FedEx Fall schedule.
"Yeah, if I was fighting for position for next year still, it would be a very different mindset to what I've currently got," he said.
"It's nice playing with a little less stress on keeping your job and a little more focus on improving your game and working on some things that you've been working on behind the scenes."
"It's a relaxed sort of attitude and approach to the week and is leading to some good golf because I'm sure there's some good takeaways going forward."
Theegala was erratic off the tee but did a great job of scrambling to stay in front.
"The big key for me is just try to keep it in the fairway, which I haven't done a great job the last three days and I feel like I'm just scrambling," he said. "I feel like if I'm in the fairway, it's almost feels like a bonus."
Playing before joining the US team for the Ryder Cup in Rome, Thomas said his game still wasn't as sharp as he'd prefer, but he was encouraged that he's scoring and in contention .
