Felise Kaufusi has provided the Dolphins' a cultural blueprint and Tom Gilbert admits the players now must answer the "big question" as they back up from a historic NRL win.

The new club shocked the competition with a bruising, inspired round one defeat of the Sydney Roosters on Sunday at Suncorp Stadium.

They'll next meet Canberra at a sold-out Kayo Stadium on Saturday at their Redcliffe base, just a short drive from where Gilbert went to school.

He says the team has embraced the buzz their 28-18 upset of the Roosters created, but know they must prove it wasn't a one-off.

"That's the big question now, 'Can we do it again?'," he said after training on Wednesday.

"There's at least belief in the group that's the performance we should aim for each week."

More than $100,000 of merchandise was sold at the ground alone on Sunday and Gilbert said the buzz around town since had been palpable.

"It's been awesome; we got the two points but we earnt the respect of a lot of people and fans, they had something to talk about on Monday.

"You've got to lean into it; we're a club that wants to represent Redcliffe, Moreton Bay and up to Rocky really well."

Former Melbourne back-rower Kaufusi set the tone in the Dolphins' NRL debut, crunching Brandon Smith and Egan Butcher in twin tackles that turned the match in their favour.

They came after Kaufusi had lost his cool to give away a penalty.

"They were even more impressive in slo-mo that's for sure," Gilbert said of Kaufusi's jarring defence.

"He made a mistake with the penalty, but there's times we make mistakes, it's part of footy.

"It's about what you do next that's most important and that can be a real theme of the club.

"It can't always be him, but we know what it looks like and it's infectious for the group."

Kaufusi sat out Wednesday's main session with a sore ankle while captain Jesse Bromwich finished the morning with ice on his elbow after a collision in a tackle.

Both are expected to play but Ray Stone (knee) will miss at least a week, replaced by Mason Teague in the only change to the side.
