Reds pick Berry to sift out 'stupid' Super penalties

The Queensland Reds have enlisted referee and former player Nic Berry as part of a crackdown on their own ill-discipline that's cost them this season.

The Queensland Reds have brought in referee and former halfback Nic Berry to iron out their ill-discipline ahead of a crunch Super Rugby Pacific clash with the Western Force.

Berry blew the whistle at Ballymore on Thursday in a training visit designed to highlight the "stupid" penalties that are costing the sixth-placed side.

The Reds have conceded 12.1 penalties per game this season, ranking them 10th in the competition to ram home how costly they've been in a 3-5 campaign.

Offside was a particular focus of the session, while breakdown infringements have been another common discretion.

The Force are no better, ranking last in the competition with 12.6 penalties per game

"That's been killing us and we're at the point now if we don't stop it our season will be done," flanker Harry Wilson, who confirmed a two-year contract extension on Thursday, said.

"We've been so clear on cutting the stupid penalties out of the game."

Queensland beat the Force 71-20 earlier this season but while the Reds have stalled the Force have kicked on, beating the Highlanders last week to improve to 3-5 and eighth, just two points behind the Reds.

"That was a long time ago," Thorn said of their round two domination.

"They're a very good side; they don't go away and got a good result against the Highlanders ... it'll be a really tough game."

Reds captain Liam Wright and lock Seru Uru will return from injury for the Reds, while Jordan Petaia will play fullback and shift Jock Campbell to the wing.

Lawson Creighton has retained the No.10, keeping James O'Connor at inside centre and Tom Lynagh on the bench.

The Force made three changes to their winning side, with prop Tom Robertson (calf), flanker Ollie Callan (neck) and winger Toni Pulu (concussion) all ruled out.

Charlie Hancock has been named at loosehead prop for his Force debut, while former Waratah Carlo Tizzano comes in at flanker.

Zach Kibirige replaces Pulu on the wing, and halfback Gareth Simpson earns a spot on the bench after recovering from a quad strain.

Former Reds duo Bryce Hegarty and Hamish Stewart will link up for the second straight week at No.10 and 12 respectively.
