West Brom vs Wolves tips: History versus quality in cup derby

One of the marquee ties of the FA Cup fourth round sees West Brom welcome Wolves in the first Black Country derby with fans in over a decade on Sunday morning at 1145 GMT.

The Hawthorns will be in full voice as the Baggies look stun their Premier League rivals.

The previous two encounters between West Brom and Wolves took place in 2021 during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Without spectators, the fixture certainly didn't have that derby feeling, yet that didn't stop the Baggies from picking up four points.

The last derby to take place with fans was back in 2012 when West Brom silenced Molineux with a stunning 5-1 victory.

The Baggies have a terrific record in this fixture, winning nine of the last 14 meetings and losing just twice.

Wolves may be the Premier League outfit, though that won't make their task any easier against a promotion chasing West Brom side.

The Baggies are well in the play-off fight in the Championship, currently sitting fifth in the table.

Carlos Corberan's men have won four of their last six matches in all competitions and will have a rowdy home support behind them.

Wolves, however, are also in good form. Gary O'Neil's side are unbeaten in six matches and sit in a comfortable 11th position in the Premier League.

That fact alone may drive the visitors on in this fixture. Realistically speaking, Wolves won't be relegated. They are also unlikely to push for Europe.

With that in mind, this may be the perfect time for Wolverhampton to make a serious push in the FA Cup.

The club haven't won a big domestic cup since their League Cup triumph in 1980, while their last big run in the FA Cup took place back in 2018/19 when they reached the semi-final.

Our recommendation is to back Premier League quality to prevail over head-to-head history. Wolves to win the match by a single goal margin is the way to go.

Team news

West Brom will have to contend without the injured trio of Okay Yokuslu, Matt Phillips and Josh Maja.

Wolves, meanwhile, are without injured striker Hee-Chan Hwang. Jonny Castro Otto is also expected to complete his move away from the club.
