Tulloch Lodge strikes with another two-year-old winner

Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott’s heady season with the babies has continued at Randwick.

Improving juvenile The Little Pumper has all but raced his way into the early-season three-year-old features after making it two wins from as many starts as a gelding.

Typical of the Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained team, the youngster assumed the lead and found plenty under pressure to land his first Saturday-grade success in the Inglis Race Series Closing Handicap (1400m) at Randwick.

Gelded after he finished unplaced as favourite behind subsequent dual Group 1 winner Militarize at Canterbury in February, The Little Pumper added Saturday's race to his midweek victory at Canterbury last month.

Bott said he had returned a more focused horse and better able to execute.

"He showed his professionalism today," Bott said.

"He was able to control the race right from the outset. He bounced straight into stride and showed good tactical speed.

"There was also a little bit of pressure there early while they were sorting their positions out and he was able to settle and relax and maintain that rhythm.

"That was the key, which he probably wasn't able to do six months ago."

Waterhouse and Bott have enjoyed a remarkable season with their two-year-olds, The Little Pumper bringing up their 34th juvenile winner.

The horse is now likely to be freshened-up with the Golden Rose lead-ups his potential aims.

"We might have to because I don't think there are many more races for him now we've stretched him to 1400," Bott said.

"Even with those Golden Rose lead-ups, you're coming back to 1200 or those sharper trips, which isn't easy for him to do either.

"I didn't look far past today, I just thought this was an ideal next step. He showed he was able to space his runs coming into today and we might look to do so again."

Partnered by Adam Hyeronimus, The Little Pumper ($2.90 fav) scored by a length over Private Legacy ($8), who was doing her best work late, with Canadian Ruler ($9) holding down third another three-quarters of a length back.
