Lightning Stakes from the past

tigerrish
Has always been a high quality affair this race.

My top five winner of past renewals in no particular order.

- Black Caviar 2013
To come back from such a long spell and the trip across the globe to break that long standing course record, was some achievement.

- Takeover Target 2006
Faced the breeze all the way up the straight and fought them all off in a pretty classy field.

- Choisir 2003
Set the tone for what was to come a few months later in England. To basically race against himself down on the rail as a 3yr was a high class performance.

- Schillaci 1992
Those saw him race for the first time this day would swear he was a seasoned G1 sprinter. He raced like he owned the track, once he saw daylight and got to the front, no one was getting past him.

- Placid Ark 1987
He was a bulldog who'd break their hearts trying to run him down. This race launched him into setting benchmarks for others to follow too.

Honourable mentions to:
Fastnet Rock
Mahogany
Miss Andretti
Zeditave
Special

Anyone else have a different top five?

I remember Special breaking the track record but Black Caviar was a very special girl.....in League terms "an Immortal".

While Takeover Target’s Lightning win over a gun field of 3yo sprinters was outstanding, I have always considered his Newmarket win two starts later as just about his career best win. Drawn out in barrier 12 with Glamour Puss and Rewaaya immediately on his inside (whose jockeys were determined to go grandstand side), Jay ford who was instructed to go flat side at all cost, had to ride Takeover Target hard through the first 150-200 metres to clear the horses on his immediate inside, before he could cross to the flat side with those horses then trailing him across. In the meantime, Snitzel was straight on the bunny and had a 4 length lead at the 400m, with Takeover Target off the bit and chasing without cover the whole way. So fast did Takeover Target finish over the top of Snitzel, even though he only appeared to get up in the last bound, he actually won by 0.5 lengths.
