fat back pocket
No points for tipping the likes of Onemorenomore or Manhattan Rain...what I'm after are a few that might not have done much at two but have shown enough to suggest that with a few extra months maturity under their belt they could take the next step.
Juggle The Books as his Puffa on Cup Day was good enough, but he backed up with three winners yesterday.
No wonder he's even more jovial than usual in his Stakes Day show.
Give it a rest Patto, he's won his race for you at big odds this spring.
The man has been on fire with his Puffers the last couple of weeks...Bel Mer ($13) two Saturdays ago and then Baughurst ($15) the other day.
Can he do it again?
I backed The Target, so I've got a vested interest. I would love to know what someone who wasn't on either horse thought.
Really was one of those where you could mount a case either way.
What I've discovered so far is:
* Seven horses have won the race a year after running a minor placing. Sadly for El Segundo fans it's never happened two years in a row.
* Only four VRC Derby winners have won the Cox Plate the year after their Derby success. It's a fair quartet, too: Phar Lap, Hydrogen, Tobin Bronze and Dulcify (which means it hasn't happened for 28 years).
* It's unlikely Devil Moon and Miss Finland will fight out the race. Makybe Diva and Lotteria are the only mares to have run the quinella.
* If winning saddlecloths are anything to go by, Devil Moon has no hope. No 12 has only been carried to victory once and that was in 1949. No 1 has easily the best record with 19 wins. Next best is No 2 with 11 wins.
* No winner has ever started from barrier 12 (sorry Zipping).
* Canny Lad and Sky High are the only Golden Slipper winners to run a place in the Cox Plate. Both ran third.
* And as for particular lead-up runs, since 1992 Dane Ripper is the only winner to have run further back than 4th at their previous start (DR ran 11th in the Epsom). Seven of those winners also won at their previous start.
Interestingly, the past five winners have all had their final lead-up run in different races (working backwards; Yalumba, Turnbull, Spring Champion Stks, Toorak, Caulfield Cup).
