I've been everywhere man

lance barnard

Gee, being the number one jockey for the maroon and white team means you have to get around a fair bit. You do get to ride some good ones though.

K McEvoy rode at Wyong last Wednesday, then spent part of Thursday night at Canterbury trying to get Deseutude to point its head in the right direction.

Saturday was Wilander and Romneya at Flemington.

Why then is he riding only one horse, a 50-1 shot, at Cranbourne today. Maybe Difference in worth the effort. I'm not sure

Secret Savings

lance barnard

My favourite sire passed away yesterday and went to the Emirates equvalent of heaven.

I still remember his first start in Australia when he won first up in Sydney at 40-1. His form had been 4 first up runs for 4 wins!

Backing his kids has given me a lot of pleasure over the years especially Shamekha.

Today in race 5 at Randwick Unordered might fly the flag for him as a tribute.

my namesake

I just realised that my namesake is having its first start in the next at the Gold Coast today. DR Barnard.

I hope it goes fast.

aztec smytzer

lance barnard

Well I don't usually start a post but there is an unusual confidence about this one, and I must share.

2 starts ago I notice Aztec Smytzer in a race over 1400 at Flemington make a great deal of ground in the last 100 metres after being last at the 200. The horse that beat it has subsequently been in fine form -Sea Battle.

Imagine my delight when it came out next start to win the Seymour Cup (over 1600m). It wasn't well ridden, strating a run at the 700 and hitting the front with 350 to go, but it kept going to win easily.

Tomorrow back to 1400, which is a bit of a worry.

However -
M Zahra will ride it better
This Track 3-1-0-1
This Distance 6-2-0-2
You can pretend it's Makybe Diva in the run
Won on this day a couple of years ago.
$15 in the paper today

It is not a moral, but could be a great way to finish the last race of the carnival.

lance

Well he took his first step today with a win at Randwick on Fancyfree. ( should have noticed it had won first up 3 times before).

He had ridden 20 consecutive losers upon resuming in Australia last week.

Anyway, I am humbly suggesting, and hoping, that the monkey is off his back and he will start to make a few waves.

I predict he can ride 3 group ones over the rest of the carnival.

Opinions?

The Moral Victory

lance barnard

How do you punters feel when you are "in the zone" but the bank balance is not improving.

Unlike most punters I feel great. This is due to a phenomenon known as the "moral victory", of which I am a staunch advocate. The moral victory occurs every time you lose but circumstances allow that there was no shame involved and you can still hold your head up high. As an optimist, I reckon that sometimes you have to be happy with the warm glow from having played well, even though victory was not achieved.

Example 1: Last Sunday I got one eighth of the Doomben quaddie (24K) but on checking my TAB account balance was dismayed to find that I had failed to submit my ticket correctly. i got exactly one eighth of zilch.

Example 2: I enter a selection and a sub for each race in Raw Instinct's Groupies comp on this site. Here are my last 6 entries.

Qld Oaks
Pavlova (sub Allow – Won $9.70)

Doomben 10,000
Shania Dane (sub Undue- Won - $45.80)

Doomben Cup
Xcelerate (sub Above Deck – Won- $2.70)

BTC Cup
Undue (Media)

Sa Derby
Pride of Westbury (sub Testifiable – Won-$3.40)

Goodwood Hcp
Ellicorsam (sub Perfectly Ready – Won-$18.20)

These examples are some of my best work. The "moral victory" is alive and well in the barnard household at present.

What is a bad day at the office for a jockey? I suppose to be at home in the office instead of getting rides.

Anyway like the recent thread on mug punter or pro suggested I lean heavily towards mugdom with a string of jockeys to follow and another string of jockeys (successful ones)to avoid, My favourite jockey to back is Steven King.

Today he had 4 rides at Moonee Valley.
Valrossi last
Twisted Heart - last
Delzao - last
Lord of Lauristan - last.

That's a bad day at the office.

PS 6 of his last 8 rides have come last. The other 2 beat one home only.
I have been concerned for a while about irreparable harm done to our National treasure the Melbourne Cup. Forget Betfair. Forget the overseas horses plundering it.. Forget the controversial VRC committee balloting clauses. The MC is being damaged because a few years ago somebody changed the starting time. I?ll explain.

As a young lance, my formative years were spent in the certain knowledge that school would come to a standstill for 10 minutes on the first Tuesday in November. I remember as an 8 year old at OLSH Leura listening to Rain Lover blitz the field. As a 13 year old I was on a school excursion to the Steel works and listened to Gala Supreme win on the bus ride home. Schools outside of Victoria always stopped for the Cup. Except for 1977 on attempting my Higher School Certificate Modern History exam in a stuffy school library and having to wait an agonizing 90 minutes before finding out that Gold and Black had done the deed. (Not one question on the Cup in the whole exam I recall)

Since those heady days things have changed. The ?Race that stops the Nation? now doesn?t! It is not held during school hours. At 3.10pm this Tuesday hundreds of thousands of school kids will be oblivious to the Melbourne Cup. They will be hopping onto buses and trains to go home. They have done this for a number of years now. Most have never had the illicit thrill of their Science lesson coming to a clandestine stop as their teacher revealed the hastily smuggled in TV for the big race. (In all the other classes TVs and radios had been similarly employed).

What is the long term consequence. These children will be adults without an ownership of our National tradition. These will be the bosses who schedule a board meeting at 3.00 and won?t have thought of putting a TV into the room. Office sweeps could be a thing of the past due to apathy.

I say go back to starting the Cup at 2.40pm. For the long term prosperity of the race that stops the Nation. Otherwise it may end up stopping Victoria only!

Long shots at Athens

lance barnard

Did anyone catch the synchronised men's diving at the Olympics.
There it was going to plan with China coasting to victory over Russia and the US and Australia ready to feature somewhere in the superfecta.

Then the following unlikely events all happened. Spooky!

1) One of the Chinese decided to opt out of the rehearsed triple twisting piked aerobatic midway through it and went for the much less difficult "bomb" (failing to inform his partner of the new plans)- zero points awarded.

2. One of the russians kicked the board during his descent and plummeted to a dismally low score.

3. Both Americans (with a gold medal beckoning)misjudged their entry to great comical effect and a big splash. (although the fact that they both did it should have been rewarded more by the judges)

This left the Greek divers Hansie Kronjopoulos and Salim Malikoussis with the most unlikely of gold medals.

Has anyone spoken to the bookmakers in Pakistan?

Just a thought

lance barnard

Last year on Stradbroke Day a horse called Sovereign Express won a 1000m scamper carrying 53kgs.

Tomorrow the same horse is racing over 1000m carrying 52kgs (after apparently winning a barrier trial 3 days ago)

Just a thought.
