racing gal

Just a question to any forum poster who is a member of any of the Melbourne Raced Clubs.

When you arrive at the races, being a member, do you have to wait until the gates open or are you allowed to scan straight into the course.

Before the AJC and STC merged all AJC club member could gain entry whenever they arrived (providing it was not at the crack of dawn)but since the merger you have line up and they will not let you in 1 minute before gate opening time which often coincides with the genral public admittance. I sometimes wonder whether it is worthwhile being a member.

Last Saturday we lined up in the rain and would not even let us in to stand under shelter.

I am planning to say something about this at the next information session but thought I would check what happend with the Melbourne Clubs.

Special

Racing Gal

With all the talk this week about Black Caviar breaking Special's track record it was interesting to see on Thoroughbreds this week a story on Special. She is 29 and living out her days as a nanny at Arrowfield Stud having been retired from breeding after the 2007 breeding season.

She look in good condition and seems to be enjoying life at Arrowfield.

I checked her breeding record and although she only had 2 stakeswinners she did produce quite a few foals but obviously none as good as her.
In October this year it will be 200 years since the first race meeting was held in Australia. It was held in Hyde Park and organised by officers of Governor Macquarie's 73rd Regiment. From all reports it was a success with plenty of alcohol consumed. It was the same scenario 28 years later when the 1st race meeting was held in Melbourne which goes to show that not much has changed in 200 years.

The 2nd state to start racing was Tasmania in 1814 followed by Western Australian in 1836. Victoria followed in 1938 and Queensland and South Australia both had their 1st meetings in 1843. By 1883, 192 clubs were registered under Australian Jockey Club rules.

This is just a start to some research I am doing and will post my findings over the next few months.

2010 is a big year for racing 200 years of racing in Australia and the 150th Anniversary of the Melbourne Cup.

One surprise this week was at the launch of the Autumn Carnival when the Premier and 2 Ministers actually turned up to the launch. The last Premier of NSW to have anything to do with racing was Barry Unsworth over 20 years ago. I just hope this was not a one off and she actually turns up at a meeting over the Carnival. Her electorate in very close to Randwick so that might be a good place to start.

Patinack

Racing Gal

I heard this morning that Jason Coyle has left Patinack. He apparently resigned yesterday and was packed and gone this morning.

New trainer John Thompson is taking over the whole stable. Good luck John.

Sunline - Fighting for Life

Racing Gal

It has been reported that Sunline is fighting for her life in NZ.

She was struck down by laminitis, compounded by complications resulting from surgery for colic.

Trevor McKee will make a decision later as to whether she will be put down.

Hopefully she can be saved even if she never as another foal. Hang in there girl.

Grand Armee & Bentley Biscuit

Racing Gal

For any posters who are wondering what these two horses are doing in retirement here is an update.

Grand Armee is progressing through his classes in eventing and the plan is for him to qualify at Olympic level and maybe compete at the London Olympics. He has been competing for a couple of years now and is showing promise.

Bentley Biscuit is now with Shane Rose who represented Australia in the 3 day event in Beijing (winning silver). The horse he rode in Beijing was a very slow horse he found in a mixed thoroughbred sale and he ran the fastest time in the cross country. He is hoping Bentley Biscuit will measure up to eventing.

A story on these former top horses will appear in the coming weeks on Thoroughbreds on TVN. Nice to see these horses proving successful in their life after racing.

The Track

Racing Gal

I am in the middle of a spring clean of my DVD's/Videos and I find I have 2 copies of the series "The Track" which was shown on the ABC about 2001 (?).

This was a very good series which traced the racing industry from the early days of the colony to when the program was made.

As I only need 1 copy of this series if anyone would like the Video version of this series just let me know and I am happy to post to whoever wants it. I don't know how many people still have videos but I though there might be someone. This tape will be tossed out if I have no takers.
With World Youth Day fast approaching and our Premier "Morris Dilemma" telling all citizens of Sydney that if that don't need to be in the city for the event to take a holiday I have decided to take his advice and am heading to Melbourne.

Could one of this forum Melbourne residents assist me by advising where they are racing on Saturday 19 July and I plan to attend.

Thanks in advance

New Ingham Trainer

Racing Gal

It has been announced that Rosehill trainer Chris Waller will be the new trainer for all the Ingham horses. They have kept Hoystar (which is actually raced by Norma Ingham and her children) and two other horses and will be buying at the Inglis Yearling Sale in April.

Chris is certainly making his way up the Sydney training ranks since arriving from New Zealand.

It has also been speculated that Corey Brown is in the mix to be the stable rider for Crown Lodge. Maybe he will be the Melbourne rider and Danny Nicolic will be the Sydney rider as I imagine Crown Lodge will continue to have a strong presence in Melbourne.

Grand Prix at Flemington

Racing Gal

I heard on the radio this morning and then saw an article on the Age Website that Ron Walker is canvassing moving the Grand Prix from Albert Park to Flemington. Tell me this is a joke.

Hopefully the Government will not even consider this. I just can't imagine cars racing around Flemington and I can't see the VRC even entertaining this. This would be worse than WYD at Randwick.
