Crown Golden Ale Peter Young (G2)
Mourinho continued his excellent form this preparation, now winning two his three starts. He travelled nicely in fifth place, one off the rails, before moving up well nearing the home turn. He raced to the front at the 200m, fought back gamely when challenged, and although he veered out over the last 100m, he held on strongly to score by three quarters of a length. Happy Trails was back in seventh place, switched out on turning for home and went to third at the 200m. He looked a threat at the 100m but was held by the winner to finish second, putting up a sound effort at his second run since resuming. Akzar was back in ninth place on the rails, switched across heels on turning in the straight and ran on for a most encouraging third. Spillway was second last in the 13-horse field, he fanned deep at the home turn and made good late ground for (2 lengths) fourth. Au Revoir, who was handy all the way, held on for fifth. Protectionist, having his first run since his brilliant Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) victory, was towards the rear (between runners) and was under riding from Craig Williams nearing the home turn. He continued to make ground in the straight, without threatening, for a sound (4 lengths) sixth, obviously looking for longer distances.
