The well supported Tan Tat Diamond was ridden patiently by Luke Nolen, remaining back in about sixth place, in centre-field. He put in a quick sprint approaching the 400m, hit the lead at the 300m and then battled strongly to score narrowly but well. Raposo did not show much early pace and settled about ninth. He switched to the rails side at the 800m, challenged at the 400m and kept fighting gamely all the way to the post for a good second, beaten a head. Beluga Caviar shared the lead, closer to the rails, travelling well at a moderate early tempo (first 600m 36.54). He raced greenly from the 400m point when challenged but still fought back well for a close-up third, on debut. He should improve significantly from the experience and looks the making of a good colt. The favourite Dupe ‘Em was very slowly and was last in the ten-horse field in the early stages. He then tracked up behind runners before switching to the centre of the track at the 400m and ran on quite well from that point for fourth, beaten just under a length. He was also unsuited by the sprint home tactics (last 600m 34.77) of the race, so it was quite a good performance under the circumstances. *ANZ
