Lexus Newmarket Hcp (G1)
Something of an upset in the big sprint with UK import and Hong Kong performed Redkirk Warrior winning easily in a race considered short of his preferred distance, as well as having his first run since November. Redkirk Warrior began as well as most from barrier four and jockey Regan Bayliss had the gelding one off the fence camped in behind the lead upon settling. Bayliss had him under a tight hold and with 400m to run eased up to the leader's flank. Bayliss urged his mount to take over at the 300m and inside the 200m asked for his run and they pulled clear. The break was too much and they were going better than anything else at the post to score by two lengths. Voodoo Lad settled midfield on the inner, found room at the 300m, drove through to be a danger at the 100m and ran on best of the rest without ever looking like catching the winner. Star Turn led past the crossing, shared the lead with the winner at the 400m and although passed soon after held on well for third. Sheidel had a nice trail (rails) in third to the 500m, seemed flat for a few strides but rallied to get into fourth at the post. Tivaci was last at the 300m, bullocked his way through and flew the last 50m to grab (2.5 lengths) fifth. Favourite Extreme Choice had every chance but showed little over the final stages to finish 2.9 lengths sixth while second favourite Spieth finished 3.3 lengths ninth.
