The Mike Moroney-trained Surpass made it three wins in succession with another good win here. He travelled well just past midfield. He was giving the leader about eight lengths at the 600m marker as he commenced a wide turn. He fanned very wide at the home bend then dashed clear to score impressively. The favourite Castlzeberg ($3.20), who was third in the New Zealand Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) last season, was second to the turn but dropped out in the straight to finish last in the 14-horse field, racing well below his best. *ANZ
