The David Hayes-trained colt Akhlaaq went straight to the lead. He steadied the early tempo (first 400m 24.32), travelling strongly, and easily increased his lead approaching the home turn. He raced well clear in the straight to score effortlessly by four lengths, sprinting home his final 600m in a smart 34.42. It was a very impressive effort. Manhattan Prince was fourth to the turn, went to a distant second half-way down the straight and then battled on quite well for second, having no chance with the winner while the filly Our Cavalla made ground from seventh to take the minor placing, beaten just over five lengths. *ANZ
