Tatt's Club Chelmsford Stakes (G2)
The Queensland Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) winner Hawkspur was ridden patiently by Jim Cassidy who let him drop back to last in the 11-horse field early on. He improved to eighth on the rails rounding the home turn, got a split between runners at the 300m and burst to the lead at the 100m. He then sprinted clear and went on to score by just over three lengths, in a most impressive win. Beaten Up began well from a wide barrier (9) and surprisingly went to the lead. He then steadied the pace before moving clear at the 300m. He battled on well over the final stages to hold second place, having no chance with the winner’s late run. Lightinthenite raced outside the leader (Beaten Up) to the 200m and fought on nicely for a good first-up third. Moriarty was a handy fifth most of the way to the turn and kept fighting on to finish fourth. The favourite Veyron missed the start and settled midfield on the rails. He was blocked for a run at the 300m but only plugged when clear from the 200m point to finish eighth. *ANZ
