Xirrus Fireball Stakes (LR)
The lightly-raced filly Shamalia stepped up to take out this stakes race in good style, albeit narrowly. She travelled nicely midfield, between runners. She angled for and got a run on passing the 200m, took the lead at the 100m and fought gamely to win by in photo. It was a promising effort by this progressive filly. The well-performed colt Sidestep was near last to the 600m, went very wide on straightening and looked the winner when he challenged at the 100m and fought on well under his top weight (59kg) for a good first-up second. Boss Lane was a handy fifth, but wide, before challenging at the 200m. He then battled on well for third, beaten a length and a half. Flight Academy was near last to the turn and then kept running on well for a good fourth after having trouble getting clear running in the straight on several occasions. The second favourite Open Book ($4) raced three deep outside the leading pair to the turn and held on quite well after working for fifth while the favourite Cosmic Endeavour ($3) shared the lead, one off the rails, to the turn. But weakened in the latter stages to finish (three and half lengths) sixth. *ANZ
