Tallyho Twinkletoe has looked this winter like a rising star jumper and he confirmed that today in the Prestige jumping event of the Grand National Hurdle (4200m) at Riccarton. The better footing of a Dead5 never worried the Kevin Myers trained 5yo gelding that got the hattrick of hurdle wins. It is his sharp turn of foot on the flat across the top that makes gaps to the leaders get gobbled up in mere seconds. He won by seven lengths and clocked 4:43.11 in a race they rarely break five minutes in, as the footing is usually bottomless. Tallyho Twinkletoe was winning his sixth race today from eleven outings and half of them have now come over fences. He could be anything as a steeplechaser later on too and that gear change of flat speed will stand him in good stead plus he can swim too. Myers won this race in 2013 and he does clean up during this week at Riccarton over the three days. The ride was another cool, calm and collected one for Matthew Gillies and he admitted candidly after the race his mount towed him into the lead earlier than wanted but has that class edge over the rest. Kings Deep railed for second late from a handy spot while Wee Biskit ran on gamely for third and both could have done with wetter footing. Shamal was an honest fourth while Gargamel, who won this race last year on a bog, was a tiring fifth after being wide for over the first half of the race. Just Got Home after looming handy wide across the top from the back weakened the run home and too needs wetter ground. The winner Tallyho Twinkletoe is the leaper in this still on an upward plane and the sky really is the limit with many years to come plus being in an astute yard helps immeasurably too.
