The track at Riccarton was a very manmade biased product and output all day with the rail out 6m just making things worse. The winners of the eleven races and where they turned for home were led, fourth, led, led, third, led, led, second, led, fourth and second, so it was a very defined manmade bias. This Listed 3yo filly only race over 1200m saw the two clear favourites end up sharing the lead on settling and being superior to the rest at the finish. Emily Margaret from the ace led out then shared the pace thereafter and in a stirring duel with the favourite Wekaforce had a narrow lead at the 200m and was holding it at the 100m. She won by half a length in 1:10.07 to record her second win in four starts and her first blacktype success plus she has never been out of the money and performed on wet and dry ground. The time was surprisingly in five races held today at 1200m just the fourth fastest with the chute at Riccarton as usual producing bionic clocking. The filly has not been beaten on raceday or in a trial this season. Wekaforce drew the carpark (outside stall of 16) and burned over early with that energy used to get over the difference at the finish, so change the draws and the result flips. Quattro Katie ran a good third albeit almost three lengths from the winner but the Australian bred she is a maiden and getting better with each outing plus she will enjoy the rise to 1400m and then likely the mile. Pick Me Up raced wide fourth then third to the home turn and did well to finish fourth beaten just over four lengths as she was fresh up, so hopefully this gutbuster has not flattened her. Luvlucy, a maiden, ran a decent fifth and the stablemate of the second finisher is looking for further now. She would be an odds on moral, like Quattro Katie, back to all maidens. Devil's Staircase was eyecatching down the outer late from well back and wide on settling. Miroslava and Miss Curious were not too bad with the former better as she was wide and working more in the running. Suffragette was seen running on late like she needs more distance, after being well back and wide. Exclaim was also soon running on okay late from back and wide. Dreamtesta was not disgraced and Norma Jean needs to begin cleanly to make things easier for her. The rest either could not handle sitting wide or back with perhaps Eastern Warrior forgivable as she was six-wide for vast portions of the race. The first two home will continue to flourish in the South Island at blacktype level and the first maidens home Quattro Katie (third) and Luvlucy (fifth) are winners in waiting. Emily Margaret and Wekaforce are sprinters for sure at the moment and maybe milers, as we will find out come November 17 when the G1 1000 Guineas (1600m) is contested here. There looks a good source of future winners out of this race with mostly maidens back to their own grade but also one-win types like Pick Me Up Rio, Devil's Staircase and Miroslava. The middle name in particular was very good but as with several in this field you do wonder how many runs they can handle on good ground before it starts to hurt. There are some much more formidable fillies to come down for the G1 1000 Guineas, so whether the winner of that race has been seen out today is doubtful but still debatable as they are at least here right now and performing.
