Japan Racing Preview - 10th December 2022

A terrific weekend of JRA action kicks off on Saturday with stakes racing at all three venues: Chukyo, Hanshin, and Nakayama. The best of the black-types is the Grade 3 Chunichi Shimbun Hai over 2000m at Chukyo, where we have a special. Hopefully we have found another four winners to emulate last Saturday; it would be a great way to lead into the Grade 1 Hanshin Juvenile Fillies, and of course all the Hong Kong features, on Sunday.

Chukyo Race 11 - #6 Prognosis

This is a talented four-year-old who is yet to miss the frame from six starts, including two stakes placings.

After a fast-finishing third in this grade at just second career start, he put together three wins on end in allowance races, each time unleashing a big finish to score.

Following a summer spell, he resumed in the Cassiopeia Stakes at Hanshin and settled closer in the run in a midfield position before again charging home into second, finishing less than a length from the winner. That was over 1800m and had it been today's extra journey, it could well have been a different result. The first-up figure was not his career best, suggesting he has further upside coming into today's feature turf contest.

The extra furlong is ideal, he has drawn for an economical run, and with even luck in the straight it's hard to see him not featuring in the finish again.

Smart colt Matenro Leo appreciated the easier grade when resuming and scored an on-pace stakes win over today's journey. He was a winner at today's course and distance in this class earlier in the year and appeals as the main threat.

Hanshin Race 7 - #11 Silence Time

A frantic pace up front should set the race up perfectly for this promising juvenile who lines up for the second time in this 1200m maiden.

He was at single-figure odds on debut three weeks ago here at this distance and after getting back to slightly worse than midfield he closed with great purpose to get up for third, beaten under two lengths. Jockey Kouta Fujioka will ride the colt quietly again from a wide gate, but it should set up for the run-on horses. His figure last time suggests he is good enough to score, even without allowing for natural improvement which is likely to come.

Tera Stellar resumed with an eye-catching third in a similar race to this a fortnight ago. He again has had no luck at the barrier draw but is capable of another big finish and poses a genuine threat.

Nakayama Race 9 - #4 Boukephalas

This progressive two-year-old has had a busy first season and lines up for the sixth time today.

After a win and two placings in his maiden campaign, trainer Hiroo Shimizu stepped things up for the son of Big Arthur this campaign and he has not been disgraced. A first-up sixth in the Grade 3 Saudi Arabia Royal Cup over the mile was followed by his peak performance, a fast-finishing sixth in the Grade 2 Keio Hai Nisai Stakes over 1400m at Tokyo where he was beaten under three lengths. Coming back to 1200m may not look ideal on face value, but he has been tried at the trip twice for a win and a close second. With plenty of speed on show in this race it will set up perfectly.

The hardest to beat may be Supremo Flavor who resumed with a second over this distance at Fukushima recently, making up good late ground. He will race a bit closer from a better draw this time and his credentials are hard to ignore.

Nakayama Race 12 - #3 Grand Slam Ask

Although she is a three-year-old filly taking on older horses, the numbers point towards this daughter of Deep Impact adding to her fine results in two outings this preparation.

The first-up effort to lead all the way and prevail over 1800m at Niigata was a strong sign, as her previous performances when fresh were not all that impressive. The form was confirmed at the latest appearance when she stepped up to today's journey and again led from the outset, only to find Saint Camellia too strong in the concluding stages.

A nice drop in the weights and the likely prospect of leading without a great deal of resistance should see her prove very difficult to peg back.

Ecrin D'or resumes from a nine-week layoff. Both her wins have come when first-up from a break and she is a winner at 2000m. The fact that the last success was in May 2021 is the concern, but she is one to watch for late in the piece with Tom Marquand aboard.
