Minstrel looking to Steel back the show

Fremantle Cup winner Minstrel will be out to press one final claim to fill the Team Bond slot in next week’s Nullarbor (2536m), when he lines up in tonight’s Garrard’s – Your One Stop Shop Pace (2536m) at Gloucester Park.

The gelding hasn't started since his third placing behind Diego in last month's Governor's Cup at Gloucester Park.

Since then, his stablemate Steel The Show elevated himself into Nullarbor contention with a gallant fourth behind Magnificent Storm in his Free-For-All debut last week.

Co-trainer of the pair Greg Bond said Steel The Show was a realistic possibility of jumping ahead of Minstrel to fill their Nullarbor slot.

"He's got the level of versatility, where Minstrel is better being on the pace and not coming three or four deep," Bond told The Trots WA.

"Steel The Show sat outside the leader in a 34.9 lead time and then got tightened up on the home turn.

"He still had the tenacity to beat home Mighty Ronaldo.

"It certainly franked my opinion of the horse."

Minstrel has a tall order in front of him in tonight's $30,000 event as he looks to re-establish himself as the top seed for the slot.

The gelding will start from barrier four, while the well fancied Lavra Joe and Spirit Of St Louis have the draw advantage in barrier two and three respectively.

Bond said he was pleased with how Minstrel was tracking for his critical assignment.

"He's going well, and we are expecting a good run from him," he said.

"We have to give him this run before the Nullarbor if we are to pick him for it.

"He'd probably have to finish close to Lavra Joe and Spirit Of St Louis then have to beat Jumpingjackmac and Diego for us to pick him."

Lavra Joe heads up the TABtouch market at $1.70, ahead of Spirit Of St Louis ($2.60) and Minstrel ($9).

Meanwhile, Minstrel's talented stablemate Street Hawk will be out to score his second feature race wins in as many runs when he lines up in the Easter Cup (2503m).

Street Hawk shares TABtouch favouritism with Taking The Miki in the standing start event.

The four-year-old has to concede 10m to Taking The Miki, who is unbeaten from her two starts this campaign.

Bond said he expected Street Hawk to adapt well in his first stand.

"We qualified him from the stand last Wednesday," he said.

"He won't jump like a veteran, but we expect him to get away safe.

"We will rely on his class taking him a long way in the race and we think he's got a very good chance in it."
