Derby runner-up gets chance to bounce back

Group 1 WA Derby runner-up Hoppys Way will be out to recapture winning form when he lines up in tonight’s Garrard’s Horse & Hound Pace (2130m) at Gloucester Park this evening.

The four-year-old produced an encouraging performance first-up last month when he finished fifth behind Watching Our Coin.

Hoppys Way was involved in a spirited battle for the front and a slick 34.7 lead time for the 2130m on that occasion.

Driver Shannon Suvaljko then restrained to the pegs and struggled to get clear running room over the concluding stages.

The son of Art Major shouldn't encounter the same problem tonight, having drawn barrier one in the field of eight.

Hoppys Way's only other run since his game WA Derby run was an unplaced effort in March.

Suvaljko said he expected Hoppys Way to capitalise on the advantage.

"He's got good gate speed and it was a great run first-up," Suvaljko told TABradio.

"He just has to improve on that and he will be hard to beat."

The Kevin Keys-trained Hoppys Way is a commanding $1.55 favourite with TABtouch, ahead of Eton Rock ($4.20) and Paul Edward ($4.40).

It could be a big start to the night for the Keys and Suvaljko combination, with the pair to team up with Blitzembye from barrier one 30 minutes later in the horseandhound.com.au Pace (2130m).

Blitzembye, pictured above, finished an unlucky fifth behind The Mustang last week.

Suvaljko said he didn't expect Blitzembye to have any issues tonight.

"He's very quick," he said.

"I think he will hold them pretty easily and he's actually a very good front runner.

"He likes to bowl along out in front.

"He's ready to win."

Meanwhile, Minstrel has been scratched from tonight's Free-For-All event, which has now been reduced to seven runners.

Steel The Show is the warm $1.32 TABtouch favourite for the event, ahead of stablemate Patronus Star ($3.60).
