Australian Harness Racing Preview – 29th July 2023

The Winter Championship Final is the richest race of the night at Menangle on Saturday and brilliant last-start winner Wavethebill looks very hard to stop.

The Elizabeth Heath-trained five-year-old was very impressive from this same barrier last week when he pushed forward out wide to find the front before clearing out to spank his rivals by 23m.

That made it back-to-back Menangle wins and he is building imposing strike rates both at the circuit and the distance.

Wavethebill will be at peak fitness and is the one to beat.

Montalbano is racing well, landing his third win from his last four outings when getting home by 5.5 metres last week.

He is likely to get all the favours from a nice draw so another win is not out of the question.

Fear Cruisin left Brisbane off an Albion Park win and made an immediate impact for the new yard when scoring by 2.3m from a wider barrier here last week. He is a player again from the ace draw.

Sugar Apple continued his good form by chasing Fear Cruisin for second last week and deserves respect.

Multiple Group 1 winner Zeuss Bromac makes his return earlier on the Menangle program.

The Paul Fitzpatrick-trained gelding finished last campaign by tackling strong opposition during the summer carnival so will find this an easier assignment.

He draws widest but races well fresh and will be ready to go off two trials.

Port Au Prince is racing well with a string top-three finishes, scoring here three back and chasing the in-form South Coast Arden when runner up twice since.

He has to contend with a wider draw but has the fitness edge so could prove tough to beat again.

Mach Da Vinci switches from Brisbane but is an eight-time winner here and is good enough to make an impact from the favourable draw.

The Group 3 John Slack Memorial Trotters Cup highlights Saturday night's Ballarat card and last-start winner Chinese Whisper looks well placed to get the job done again.

He was on his best behaviour second-up and showed what he can do when scoring by more than 5m after sitting parked at Bendigo.

Chinese Whisper has a win and a placing from two attempts here and will be fitter again third up so can go on with it.

Sleepee stood flat footed from the standing start then broke when resuming but will be fitter for the hitout.

She is capable mare who can do much better behind a mobile.

Nephew Of Sonoko draws on the back row but has been solid enough of late so is worth some thought while Bullion Harry is back from a freshen and makes some appeal.

BEST BETS:

Menangle Saturday Race 1 #2 Stingray Tara @$4.80 – relished a class drop when beaten narrowly last start. The draw gives him every chance to go one better.

Menangle Saturday Race 4 #1 Soho Rhapsody @ $2.20 – produced some good efforts during her Brisbane stint and can dominate from the ace draw.
