Wagin celebrates in style with Big Kev’s 60’s themed birthday bash

It was a big night in Wagin on Friday not only on the track, but off the track with club President Kevin ‘Big Kev’ Spurr turning 60, with the night dedicated to the harness racing lover and enthusiast.

With the 60s theme in full swing, the club was once again offering a very generous $500 to the best dressed 60's lady and best dressed 60's gent on the night, with their club rooms full of local patrons getting on board for a great night of pacing action.

Shes A Lucky Penny recently made the move to the stables of Corey Peterson, and after beginning the best in the opener, the six-year-old was able to lead all the way from barrier five to claim the win by a 10m margin in 2:02:6 over the 1776m trip. Driven by Peterson on the night, the win gave him his first of a driving double on the night.

Lil Delight got the win in race two at $21 odds for Sarah and Joseph Suvaljko after the pair were able to lead all the way over the 1776m journey.  With a winning mile rate of 2:03:0, they never looked in any danger, going on to win by 3.9m and breaking a 35-start losing sequence, her first win since January when she led all the way at Busselton on New Years Day.

It wouldn't be country racing without a win for Trent Wheeler, and he did just that in race three when he piloted Gota Good Warhol to victory for Hayden Reeves. The consistent four-year-old brought up his sixth career win at start 55, his fifth this season alone. The $2.50 was able to lead from barrier two, holding out Sport Sport Sport for the entire journey with the two tussling it out to the line with just a head margin between them at the finish.

Toby Lynn made his debut on Friday night, and at just start three in the cart he was able to claim his first driving success. On board Bettor My Dreamz NZ for his father Brad, the pair was able to lead all the way from barrier one, with the win breaking a two-and-a-half-year hiatus from the winner's circle for the seven-year-old.

Corey Peterson's second leg of his driving double was completed in race five when he drove Franco Western to victory for trainer Giles Inwood. Breaking the lead to win pattern we had seen in the previous four races, Peterson eventually settled one-out-one-back, making his way three wide approaching the final turn to win by 6.3m in 2:09:3 over the 2590m.

John Fagg is making a habit of taking home a winner, with Sanford Bart taking out the 3YO event, race six for driver Emily Johnson. With a last start win just 5 days prior at Kellerberrin, Sanford Bart showed his strength after settling in the breeze over the 1776m trip, coming out on top with a 1.6m winning margin in 2:04:6.

With Fagg making the mammoth trip from Ravensthorpe, the win with their homebred gelding would have made the drive home that little bit easier, with four horses engaged in the night for a win and two third placings adding to their success on the night.

The last on the card went the way of Ubeen Thundastruck for trainer/driver Donald Harper. The two-year-old by the ill-fated Rock N Roll World USA came from midfield in the final event, with Harper weaving his way through runners, taking advantage of plenty of spaces opening up to win by a head over Worlds Above, shattering any hopes of Peterson getting a driving treble on the night.

Racing returns to Wagin on November 17, with just two meetings remaining for their season.

Their current leaderboard shows Hayden Reeves currently in top spot for Leading Club Trainer on 61 points, 37 points ahead of Peter Anderson who is currently on 24 points.

With just six points separating them so far, Trent Wheeler currently leads the Leading Club Driver on 46 points, with Dean Miller sitting on 40 points, at this point, either could take home the title at the clubs seasonal wind-up on December 1.

Just one point separates the Leading Club Junior Driver with Corey Peterson sitting on 24 points and Kyle Symington on 23.

It's currently a tie for Leading Club Pacer with both Maddy Maddy and Sanford Harry on 11 points each. I see Fire is hot on their heels on 10 points and Gota Good Warhol just behind them on 9 points.  With two meetings to go, the Leading Club Pacer could go many ways.
