Insta Gator rewards patient Young

Trainer Madeliene Young has been rewarded for her persistence with Insta Gator, after the pacer took out last night’s TABtouch-North Eastern Districts Council Derby (2190m) at Northam.

The colt was able to upstage warm favourite Star Lavra in the event, where he sat outside race leader Stapleton and rated 1:59.6.

It was Insta Gator's first win in more than 10 months and ended a frustrating run of placings.

Madeliene Young said she sought plenty of advice on how to improve Insta Gator's racing manners and felt last night could prove to be a turning point.

"I had a lot of trouble steering him and he's been hanging really bad," Young told The Trots WA.

"All of his runs have been really good.

"He's been doing it tough in the breeze, hanging and still running well.

"I spoke to Ryan Warwick and he suggested a bridle they used at (Greg and Skye) Bondy's.

"I got one of those and put a murphy blind and rein pricker on him and it straightened him right up."

Star Lavra produced a meritorious performance to run second, having sat three-wide over the final lap of the race.

Insta Gator will be looking to further press his claims for a spot in next month's WA Derby (2536m), by winning Friday's Cowden Serving WA Since 1972 Western Gateway Consolation (2536m).

Young said she was happy with how Insta Gator came through last night's win and would run again on Friday.

"Last night's run hasn't bothered him at all," she said.

"He was running around the paddock this morning and has eaten up.

"It looks a winnable race if he brings what we know he can.

"Now he's going straight, hopefully we see improvement in him."

Young will be hoping for more success in other three-year-old events on Friday's Gloucester Park card, with Skylord and Castella Dellacqua, pictured above.

Skylord looks set to have strong place claims in the Cowden Insurance-Western Gateway (2536m), where he meets talented three-year-olds Mister Smartee and Never Ending.

Young said Skylord, trained by her sister Jocelyn, would improve from his first-up run at Pinjarra on Monday.

"I'm looking forward to getting behind him again.

"She (Jocelyn) seemed quite happy with his run on Monday.

"Hopefully with that run under his belt he will improve again."

Young said she would look for a soft trip with last start WA Oaks runner Castella Dellacqua in the Cowden Established 1972 Pace (2130m).

"We will drive her quietly from the back line and see if she can finish off," she said.

"She seems good, but if she's showing us she's had enough then we will look at giving her a little break."
