Unknown quantity Chevron chasing Christmas Gift

Trainer Michael Young admits he isn’t sure what to make My Ultimate Chevron, ahead of his WA debut in tonight’s Christmas Gift (2130m) at Gloucester Park.

Young purchased the gelding from Scott Whitten at Tumby Park earlier this year.

Young, who won the race last year with Firerockfireroll, said he had been monitoring My Ultimate Chevron for some time before purchasing him.

"He's a small nuggety horse and horses like that generally do well over here," Young told The Trots WA.

"He was for sale as an early two-year-old in New Zealand and they wanted about $150,000 for him.

"We looked at him then and thought about buying him.

"He won about that much in Sydney and we've picked him up a lot cheaper now.

"He gets over here on a good mark and thought we could get our money back before he's racing the better horses."

My Ultimate Chevron, formerly trained by Jarrod Alchin, will have a tricky task taking out the Christmas Gift, where he's drawn barrier four and is set to face a talented field.

Golden Nugget runners Hoppy's Way, Who's The Dad, Soho Dow Jones and Alcopony all feature in the field of 12, while Golden Nugget Consolation placegetters Arma Xfactor and Ardens Horizon will also line up.

Young said he expected a competitive showing from the son of Sweet Lou, following a Pinjarra trial earlier this month.

"His work has been good and his trial was good," he said.

"I think there was still something left in the trial because he tends to do what he has to do and not much more.

"It's a good race and the draw doesn't make things any easier.

"I think we have to go out and find a forward spot.

"We will find out what some of his attributes are."

Firerockfireroll gets his chance for another win on Christmas Gift night when he lines up in the Team Bond Pace (2130m) from barrier one.

Young said he expected the winner to come from Firerockfireroll, stablemate October Reign and the Jemma Hayman-trained Rupert Of Lincoln.
