Crowds aplenty for Busselton’s last meeting for the season

And that’s a wrap on yet another bumper season at Busselton, with the crowds coming in masses for all five of the meetings at the beachside track.

After a successful five meetings spanning from Boxing Day (December 26) until Friday, January 19, the club boasted big crowds and great weather, with their opening meeting welcoming over 1300 patrons not including staff and industry participants.

Friday's Cup and closing meeting welcomed over 1100 on course, with the weather mild and the winds holding off, uncharacteristically for the coastal based track.

It was another stellar season for Matt Scott, the Serpentine based trainer went into the cup meeting with plenty of earning possibilities, and with a team of six horses on the night, he walked away with four top four finishes, as well as cup glory, with Mikipelo taking top prize and Matt Scott walking away with Busselton Trainer of the Year.

Trent Wheeler continued his dominance around the country circuit, with another driving premiership added to his name. Although he missed out on the cup this year, Wheeler still walked away with a driving double on the card, with Gov Starzzz successful in the fifth race for trainer Cliff Woodworth, as well as Abbee Bee in the last for Clint Pearce.

Wheeler had a great night in the cart, with a full book of drives, the country specialist finished in the top three position in all seven races.

Runner-up in the Cup, 'Busselton Beast' Im The Best took out Busselton Horse of the Year for local trainer Michael Callegari, with an impressive four wins and second placing from the five meetings this season. Although a disappointing result for connections in the Cup, he was gallant in defeat taking second prize in the seasons feature.

In a close go to the line in the Sweetheart Series, it was Motor On Lilly who took out the series for the girls, ahead of Cheap Thrillz and Rockin The Trend in a very tight finish.

Trained by local based trainer Chris Feast, Motor On Lilly started at all five meetings on offer, and with two wins, a second and two fourth placings next to her name, took home the $2000 bonus incentive, as well as a further $500 towards her EPONA breeding dollars sponsored by the Western Australian Standardbreds Breeders Association (WASBA).

The connections will also enjoy a further $500 cash for taking out leading points scoring Westbred mare, with Motor On Lilly a success story for the double westbred flag (Follow The Stars x Lilyann Joy) bred by Allwood Stud Farm.

Joseph Suvaljko drove a double on the night, with Dwayne opening the precession at Churchill Park for trainer Mary Kulcsar.

Suvaljko later teamed with his mum Sarah with Rockin The Trent in the Esplanade Sweetheart Series race, with the seven-year-old mare securing third placing in the series overall.

Other winners on the night included five-year-old double westbred daughter of Fly Like An Eagle, Hope, who flashed home to win the second race for Grandfather/Grandson duo Tom and Liam Elliot.

Ashleigh Markham returned to WA in December 2023, just in time for the Busselton season, and on Friday night he brought up his first winning drive since his return on board the Chris Feast trained Motor On Jessie.
