Lavra Joe satisfies at Bunbury trial

Star pacer Lavra Joe has been cleared to race again, following a satisfactory trial over 2100m at Bunbury last night.

The Ray Jones-trained pacer was well beaten after leading at his most recent start early last month and was ordered back to trials.

In a positive sign for Jones, the gelding led throughout and won the trial in a comfortable 2:03.1.

Jones said it was a good trial from Lavra Joe and expected him to improve sharply from it.

"He probably wasn't quite ready to go to the trials, so I said to Kyle (Harper) not to do too much early and just let him run home," Jones told The Races WA.

"The vet checked him out after the trial and said he was all good.

"We will put some work into him for the next three weeks and take him back to the races."

Prior to the disappointment of last start, Lavra Joe won two of his first three starts on his return to racing.

Jones said having to go back to trials could end up being a blessing in disguise for Lavra Joe's Nullarbor prospects, where he's expected to race in the RAM Racing Syndicate slot.

"We probably would've had to have given him a break before the Nullarbor, as it may have been too long of a stint to keep going," he said.

"Now he can get the work into him and have a month of racing before it.

"The Pinjarra Cup might be too close, so hopefully he will be ready for the Bunbury Cup."

Meanwhile, multiple Group 1 winning two-year-old Menemsha is nearing a return to racing.

Trainer Aiden De Campo said he was confident Menemsha would be ready for the $50,000 APG 3YO Sales Classic (2130m) for the colts and geldings.

"I'm really happy with him," De Campo told The Trots WA.

"I definitely think he was the best two-year-old I've trained in the five years I've been doing it.

"I had The Miki Take, Floewriter and Rock On Top and he's definitely the best of all of them on what he does at home.

"He still needs to win a few races as a three-year-old to show me he's taken the next step from just being a good two-year-old."

De Campo will have The Miki Taker make his long-awaited return to racing in tomorrow's Matt Young Winner Of The Leading Tipster Competition (2130m).
