After much deliberation, trainer Ryan Bell and owner Kevin Jeavons made the decision to retire the 2019 Golden Nugget winner on Monday.

Shockwave won 22 of his 50 starts and amassed more than $550,000 in the process.

Bell said he hoped to have the son of Mach Three ready for The Nullarbor (2536m) in April, but conceded another comeback was going to be too much to ask of his stable star.

"After much deliberation with connections, we all felt it was time to make the call considering the level of maintenance to get him to the races," Bell said in a statement.

"Whilst achievable, it was unfair on him.

"Whilst we believe he had further heights to reach, we are extremely proud of what he did achieve on the racetrack."

As well as his Golden Nugget win, Shockwave scored feature race success in the James Brennan Memorial, Media Guild Cup and Winter Cup.

He was unbeaten in his final two seasons of racing.

Bell said Shockwave's Free-For-All wins gave him the biggest thrill.

"I think some of those wins in Free-For-All company where he sat outside horses like Galactic Star and Mighty Conqueror were just ridiculous," Bell told The Trots WA.

"We were also pretty proud the times where he ran second to Chicago Bull, which there was no disgrace in doing because he was a superstar.

"I do wish he had the opportunity to show what he really could've done."
