Blue’s long road leads to The Kosciuszko

The $1.3 million The Kosciuszko is Michelle Ritchie’s target for five-year-old Blue Missile, but the gelding almost never made it to the track.

It's been a long road for the Michelle Ritchie-trained Blue Missile, but the five-year-old is looking to prove his Kosciuszko credentials in the TAB Handicap (1100m) on Wednesday.

The son of Smart Missile is a winner of five races, including a hat-trick of wins last campaign which culminated in a third placing in the Country Championships Wild Card at Muswellbrook.

But Blue Missile almost never made it to the track after sustaining an injury while being transported to the breaker.

"He was on a truck on his was up to the breaker/pre-trainer and the truck broke down and he was up Camberwarra Mountain," Ritchie said.

"There was no way of actually getting the truck back off the mountain, so it had to be rolled back down with him on it.

"By the time we got the truck off the mountain and got him off after a few hours, he'd cut all his hock open.

"It's called the bursa, he punctured it and the prognosis wasn't very good and the vet thought he might have to put him down at one stage.

"I didn't ever think he'd get to the races."

The five-year-old is a half-brother to the Listed placed Better Not Blue, who finished a close second in the Civic Stakes in 2016.

Ritchie admits that the two half-siblings are nothing alike, but the Nowra-based horsewoman has always known Blue Missile would win races.

Although the $1.3 million The Kosciuszko is her target, Ritchie says another tilt at the Country Championships is on the cards should Blue Missile not gain one of the 14 slots on offer.

"My target is The Kosciuszko," she said.

"If that doesn't pan out, he'll just have the two runs this prep and he's still eligible for the Country Championships.

"He'll have two runs and if we don't get a Kosciuszko slot, I'll give him four weeks off then just get him ready for the Country Championships.

"I think he likes the give out of the ground better than a dry track, but he proved himself on both.

Blue Missile has drawn barrier eight for the Benchmark 72 event, with Rachel King in the saddle.

The Randwick-Kensington surface was rated a Soft 6 when acceptances were announced on Wednesday, a surface which Ritchie believes her five-year-old will be suited to.

"I think he likes the give out of the ground better than a dry track, but he proved himself on both," she said.

"That's a bonus with him, he can gallop on both surfaces.

"I'm very happy with him, very, very happy with him.

"The way he's come back, he's shown me a lot of improvement even since he's been back.

"I can't fault the horse at all."

Blue Missile was a classy trial winner on his home track on August 22 and is currently a $101 chance for The Kosciuszko on tab.com.au.
