No Payne, no gain: Sam's fresh start in SA

Sam Payne’s move to South Australia for a fresh start and more opportunities with his partner, apprentice jockey Zoe Lloyd, is already paying off. The 29 year old rode a double on Wednesday in his first ever hit-out at Strathalbyn.

"I've come over for three months to give it a crack, to try and get my weight down, and give it my best shot," said Payne who's riding work for Sue Jaensch at Murray Bridge.

"I've nearly sat on most of her horses now, and she's got some nice horses, and a good camp to be in with," he said.

Sam Payne's first win for the stable came on New Zealand gelding Our Selection. His second at Strathalbyn was a beautiful ride aboard the John Hickmott trained Testa Dexta. Hickmott is a good mate of Sam's grandfather Paddy Payne.

He also secured the ride on Splash Some Cash which is gunning for a third straight Cups win at the Kangaroo Island feature on Saturday.

Payne convinced his partner Lloyd to temporarily relocate to SA, after a chance meeting with Jaensch at Stawell. She offered the couple a property to rent.

The chance to be based at Murray Bridge, which is soon to be SA's biggest training centre, was an opportunity too good to refuse.

And with Jaensch's stable enjoying three wins in the past week, it's looking like an ideal time for Lloyd to be on loan from Paul Preusker.

"I guess being an apprentice in Victoria it's been not so easy, but I've also had a few injuries over time that's put me out of the saddle, so just seeing all the girls and the apprentices over here getting a chance I thought I'd give it a go," said Lloyd.

"My partner Sam thought it would be a good idea because he knows Sue and thought she'd be the perfect person to try with," she said.

The 24 year old, who's had 225 race starts, is closing in on a return from a fractured collarbone

"The support I've been getting already from the trainers at Murray Bridge has been really great. I was even offered a couple of rides over at KI this weekend if I could get race riding but I have to do jump-outs and trials first to check I'm fit enough.

"The injury has healed really well and I'm actually surprised how fit I am. I'll have a few jump-outs at Murray Bridge this Friday and be good to go the following week," she said.
