Townsville apprentice jockey Jenna Edwards repays debt with interest

Townsville apprentice jockey Jenna Edwards repaid a debt with interest with her third career Mount Isa double on Saturday.

Jenna Edwards landed the double for Mackay trainer John Manzelmann, the man who provided her with her first race ride when she was struggling to kick-start her career as a jockey.

But, it came with an extra twist when the second leg on Mister Larrabee was the talk of the race course after a win described by the race caller as an "absolute miracle".

Mister Larrabee stood flat-footed in the barrier stalls and missed the start of the 1100 metre event by a conservative seven lengths.

He was at least 10 lengths behind his stable mate and leader Splasher with less than 600 metres to travel.

But, Edwards wasn't about to concede and drove up on the rails to get within striking distance at the 250 metre mark and pulled to the outside of the two leaders at the 200 metres and stormed home to win running away by one and a half lengths.

"I was warned that he did have a habit of missing the kick but I wasn't ready for what he did." Edwards said.

"But, I was determined to go after them and just put my head down and got stuck into it.

"I wasn't even close enough to the leaders to get any of their dust.

"My bloke grabbed the bit and took off after them and coming near to the turn I reckoned he was travelling so well we could at least close.

"He put his head out and gave his all for a remarkable win".

Veteran racegoers described it as possibly the greatest-ever victory seen at the dirt track.

Edwards was successful on the five-year-old Cochrane in an earlier race.

"I owed John a big debt because he provided me with my first race ride when I was struggling after coming to North Queensland from Adelaide via Darwin to get my licence," she said.

The double took Edwards, who is apprenticed to Nome trainer and Cluden Park trainers' premiership leader Georgie Holt, to a career total of 11 wins and more than half way to her target of 20 to get her provincial licence.

"It's a bit hard to get rides locally so I'm prepared to travel virtually anywhere at the moment," she said.

"But, it's a hell of a long way out and back to Mount Isa by road.

"I got a lift with John in the horse float out to the meeting and came home with fellow Townsville jockey Jeffrey Felix, who also rode a winner on the day."

Felix was successful on five-year-old mare All At Sea for Mount Isa trainer Tanya Parry.
