2024 PRIX GANAY - RACE HISTORY AND BACKGROUND

The Prix Ganay is a Group 1 race run under Weight For Age conditions for four year olds and up usually at Longchamp conducted by France Galop.

The Prix Ganay is run over 2100m. It was first run in 1889 and was won by Acheron.

The Prix Ganay was originally known as the Prix des Sablons at 2000m and wasn't held during WWI.

Named after Jean de Ganay, it was a Group 1 from the 1971 outset of the grading system.

It is an early season guide to the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe.

Grand French horse Cirrus des Aigles won on three occasions in 2012, 2014 and 2015.

When Longchamp was out of action for its huge redevelopment, the race was run at Saint-Cloud in 2016 and 2017.

Most wins as a jockey is by Yves Saint-Martin with six while leading trainer is with Andre Fabre at seven.

Christophe Soumillon has won 5 of the last 17 runnings of the race.

Waldgeist won the Ganay in 2019 and at the end of the season won a famous Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe beating Enable in the last furlong. Sottsass did the same double in 2020.

Global trendsetter State Of Rest returned to racing after his Saratoga Derby and Cox Plate triumphs to win the Ganay first up in 2022. He'd then win the Prince Of Wales's Stakes in June and was retired later in the year.

It was run at Chantilly in 2020 due to the restrictions imposed by the coronavirus outbreak.

The last non-French winner was State Of Rest in 2022 for Joseph O'Brien.

The Prix Ganay was worth €300,000 in 2024.
