The Pinnacles: Champion Fillies Stakes Preview 2023

The Pinnacles gets underway this Saturday with multiple Group and Listed races, headlined by the WA Champion Fillies Stakes.

Plenty of very good fillies have announced themselves in the Group 3 WA Champion Fillies Stakes (1600m).

It's often a good pointer to races like the WA Guineas, Northerly Stakes, and the WA Oaks in the Autumn and this year's edition is dominated by a short-priced favourite in Keshi Boom, into $1.50 with TABtouch.

Keshi Boom is undefeated from three starts and has looked the part in all. She resumed in an 1000m Northam Class 1 where she ran some slick late sectionals to score at $1.40 and then won the Listed Burgess Queen Stakes (1400m) to defeat the $1.55 favourite Super Smink.

She did have a 4kg swing in the weights there but doesn't have to worry about the absent Super Smink so naturally, she looks the clear horse to beat.

The Burgess Queen is the obvious lead up for this race. Out of the past seven winners of the Champion Fillies, only Admiration Express hasn't run in the Burgess Queen, but interestingly in that time, no horse has done the double.

Tuscan Queen, Searchin' Roc's and Art Series all ran second in the Burgess Queen before winning the Champion Fillies, and Arcadia Queen (3rd), Samovare (3rd) and Watch Me Dance (8th) also came through the race.

Keshi Boom is an up to scratch Burgess Queen winner having run to 99 with Timeform. That's the same rating as Lady Cosmology ran to beat Arcadia Queen and the same rating Kay Cee won beating Tuscan Queen.

Naturally, she rates higher than anything in this field, hence her very short quote and it's tough to see anything turning the tables.

Miss Rockjoy was good late to grab third. Her excellent breeding (Awesome Rock x More Joyous) and the way she finished off last start suggests she'll relish the step up to a mile, and she does draw to sit much closer this time. If there were to be an upset out of the Burgess Queen, she's a big price at $26 with TABtouch.

Away from that form, the next best would be The Boss Lady, who has won her past three starts, all by half a length or less. She does have good tactical speed so can likely settle in the first four and should have no issue with the mile. She's made solid progression in her ratings, now up to 87 with Timeform, but the TABtouch market is keeping the different form safe at $8.50.

Keshi Boom is out to break the hoodoo of Burgess Queen winners in the Champion Fillies Stakes, and you'd be brave to say she isn't going to do it, however $1.50 is certainly no spoil. Miss Rockjoy looks the best each-way value in the race and can certainly run the quinella at big odds.
