Race 6: Poifect
Keen to follow this filly wherever she goes after she made a mess of them in the Listed Adelaide Guineas. Leading pillar-to-post, Poifect never gave her rivals a sniff as she cruised to the line with a 2.7L margin back to second and then a further 2.6L (5.3L) back to third. Running to 104 on the Racing and Sports scale, the daughter of Pierro not only ran new peak but is also the highest rated winner of the race in the last decade. The mile looks the perfect trip for this filly and if the Hayes boys keep her in work and are hunting for some more black type, the Group 3 Pam O'Neill (1600m) at Doomben in three weeks is a very suitable option. The Group 2 The Roses (2000m) on the same day is also on the cards if they are looking to stretch her out further but with Poifect's mum being by Flying Spur, I suggest the shorter trip will be the way to go.
Race 8: Warmonger
Once this fella can draw a gate, he is sure to take plenty of stitching. Flashing home to finish hot on their heels a fortnight ago in the G3 Chairman's Stakes, Warmonger was again forced back from the wide draw, before letting rip with a strong sustained finishing effort to grab second (1.3L) in the Group 1 SA Derby. Running to 111 on the R&S scale, Warmonger currently sits on the second line of betting for next month's Group 1 Queensland Derby (2400m), which looks a great option for the gelding. Last year's winner Kovalica was rated 107 a month out after saluting in the Queensland Guineas (1600m), he would admittedly then run 116 when finishing third in the Doomben Cup, before winning the Derby with a rating of 115. As mentioned earlier, if Warmonger was to draw a touch kinder (or just take closer order), this sort of improvement is more than attainable, and he would be a serious threat. There's no doubting this gelding's staying ability and if a Queensland stint doesn't occur, he's certainly one to follow in the Spring.
