LADIES REIGN SUPREME IN TWO CITIES

Rosehill played host to five magnificent Group 1s in a row, headlined by the Golden Slipper, whilst the William Reid Stakes was the main event in Melbourne, with a champion underlining her greatness emphatically.

Lady Of Camelot delivered Gai Waterhouse an eighth Golden Slipper by upsetting her more highly fancied runner Storm Boy (who bravely ran third). Earlier in the day it was star import Via Sistina who claimed the Ranvet, Riff Rocket was outstanding in the Guineas, Veight took out the George Ryder and Zapateo caused a huge upset in the Galaxy.

At the Valley, the Queen Imperatriz returned to the races after her gallant Newmarket Handicap appearance, and this time she didn't leave without the prize. A 10th Group 1 for the New Zealand champion who has now been the best backed runner in Australia for each of her last six starts.

The Girl's ultimately held the keys to the day's racing, but with six Group 1's in two cities there was never going to be a shortage of storylines. Here we will pull apart all the action from Rosehill and Moonee Valley on one of the best day's of racing on the calendar.

BEST BACKED WINNERS

Imperatriz (pictured) has taken over a million in matched volume twice since the start of last spring, and over $600,000 on six consecutive occasions as she was again the best backed runner in Australia.

Amazingly, she has won five of those six races and finished a gallant second in the other.

This time she was matched for $625,000 in the William Reid, which amounted to 78% of all volume taken on that race.

At Rosehill, there was good support for Via Sistina who lived up to the hype by winning very comfortably.

Riff Rocket took a stack of late money in the lead up to the Guineas, sliding straight past Tom Kitten in to favouritism before winning the race with class.

Lady of Camelot was very popular in the last five minutes of trading, but Storm Boy was still the best backed runner in that race.

FIRMERS AND DRIFTERS

Two runners firmed sharply in the opening two events at Rosehill but both ran unplaced.

Wrathful was $5.60 into $3.50 in the opening event, whilst Torrens was a massive $21 into $9 before finishing well back.

Punters certainly read Eagle Farm better early with Brookhaven shortening from $4.40 into $2.96 before winning Race 3.

Campionessa was a big drift at Moonee Valley before Race 5, from $3.55 out $5.60 before running third.

The Rosehill picture eventually became clearer, thanks largely to Via Sistina (pictured) who firmed from $3.30 into $2.26 before a convincing win.

In the Rosehill Guineas, Tom Kitten drifted sharply in the last 10 minutes having been popular all day before that. He would ease from $2.96 out to $4.80 and the late money proved spot on.

Militarize and Storm Boy also drifted significantly late before losing their feature races.

Morphettville saw a double drift in the same race, with Celui ($2.46 out to $3.35) and Give Some Lip ($3.45 out to $5.60) before both went under.

BAD BEATS AND IN-PLAY BOLTERS

The Valley program started over the Cox Plate distance of 2040m in the opening race, and that race threw up plenty of late drama.

Four runners traded as short priced favourite within the last 200m, before Magnaspin eventually got home.

Aristonius ($1.14), Up and Under ($1.30) and Marquess ($1.44) all got very short and looked home, but Magnaspin had other ideas.

The worst beat at Moonee Valley came in Race 7 when Quintessa hit a low of $1.04 in-play (matched for $221 at that price) before Antrim Coast got up late.

Antrim Coast jumped at $61.98 and traded at $90 in the run.

Eagle Farm had a shocker as well, with Malaboom going down in Race 5 after having $892 matched at or under $1.03.

PRICE ADVANTAGE

Growing Empire got things going at the Valley in Race 2 with a 22.2% price advantage over best tote with his victory.

Strawberry Rock followed it up in Race 3 at 16.7%. Eternal Flame was a great result in Race 5, with the $13.59 BSP a whopping 27% higher than best tote, or about $31 for a $10 outlay.

Vibrant Sun (18.6%) was very good in the next, but Antrim Coast's (pictured) blowout at $61.59 was 21.7% higher, which was easily the most profitable with a $120 benefit for a $10 outlay.

Imperatriz (12%) and Gumdrops (22%) rounded out the day well.

At Rosehill we saw Elletrica (24.5%) start the day with a bang in Race 1, Via Sistina was 18% better despite a firm in the Ranvet, Riff Rocket likewise at 13.1% in the Guineas, and Zapateo was 19.1% better in the Galaxy.
