SYDNEY v CARLTON

Friday 26 May @ SCG

Games don't get as desperate (and/or dire) as the one to begin the round as Sydney and Carlton could be in a knockout game and we aren't at the halfway point of 2023.

This match would have been considered a much sought after one going back to its scheduling. Now it is only for those with morbid fascination.

Let's be completely honest. Sydney were gifted the points by a North Melbourne error and only that. Had the clear interchange breach not occurred, North highly likely win.

The Swans lacked poise, confidence and at times their skills were down. It is a far cry from the excitement of 12 games ago beating Collingwood in a Prelim.

That is not to say they aren't trying and the entire backline is almost enjoying lattes from the stands. But Rampe, the McCartins, McDonald, Mills, Hickey etc all out have been an issue. Now add Ladhams as well.

Were it not for the warrior Luke Parker, bandaged like a mummy and doing a Joel Selwood impression, they probably lose by 3 goals.

Now they have to bring what they have left to Moore Park against another side bereft of self-assurance. Carlton will be doubting themselves with regularity.

It was a strange game on Sunday as Collingwood got the 4 goal jump and there wasn't much difference all the way to the line. Horrible goal kicking, and at crucial times, curtailed any thought of a comeback.

And their best still are not at their best. Cripps is not the same as last year, Walsh has taken some time to return to his post injury and now Docherty is in doubt.

Again, if Curnow and McKay don't kick near 10 between them, they lose. And yet that is highly likely this weekend even on the quick back up.

Sydney had a great record going against Carlton until the Covid era began. Even last year was a blowout before a late Swans comeback.

While it is flip of the coin, you would think the slightly more confined SCG helps the Carlton mids and their big men up forward can do a number on whoever Sydney can put out there.

Carlton and Curnow to win but it won't be pretty.

Match Selection: Carlton by 8 points

Suggested Bets: Charlie Curnow 4+ goals @ $2.20
