Here are my sporting predictions for Twenty Twelve.

I wrote it in words for a reason because my goal for this year is to stop people from saying Two Thousand and Twelve. I was born in Nineteen Seventy-Nine, not One Thousand Nine Hundred and Seventy-Nine. Start in your homes and workplaces people, spread the word that next year is Twenty Twelve.

Anyway, rant over - here are the predictions:

1. SIMON WHITLOCK WILL BECOME A MORNING TV DARLING
Autralia's first sporting sensational for 2012 will be Simon 'The Wizard' Whitlock and the tools on Sunrise and Today will be all over him like a rash. I can see a truly cringe-worthy live cross with Mark Beretta going something like this:

Mark Beretta: Well, we've got the man of the moment, Austrlia's latest world darts champion, Gavin Whitlock. Congratulations Gav.

Simon Whitlock: Ahhh, actually it's Simon Mark.

MB: No worries mate, but I'll need you to call me 'Beretts' because the focus groups say it makes me sound like more of a 'mans man'.

SW: Right...

MB: So next time you're back home Simmo we'll have to catch up and have a pint of lager to celebrate hey mate?

SW: Well, darts might be British but I am Austrlian mate - so if it's all the same to you I'll just have a schooner of beer thanks.

MB: (Laughing almost sincerely) You are a dead set card Simmo. Great work you are the pride of the nation.

SW: (Shaking his head and talking to someone left of camera) Did he just call me Simmo? Thanks Mark.

MB: It's Beretts mate.

SW: Whatever.

2. PINKER PINKER WILL LOSE SECOND UP NEXT PREPARATION
As everything stands right now, at the beginning of 2012, Pinker Pinker is a perfect 3 from 3 when second up. Hands correctly found her after her fast up run last Spring and is rolling in pineapples as a result, but as a reigning Cox Plate Champion I'm potting her to keep the second up record in tact. She was 30-1 when she won the Cox and she was about 6-1 when she won second up at Flemington in the Let's Elope last September. Next second up run she will be a well tried favourite and every urger on TV from Alf Mathews to Richie Callander will be falling over themselves to tip her as a certainty. She will get rolled when well under the odds.

3. THE LOVE AFFAIR WITH CADEL EVANS WILL END
I don't want to be percieved as a Cadel knocker - far from it. I watch the mountain stages of the TDF every year and love it. I can't handle the flat stages but the rugged terrain of the Alps and Pyranese (no idea how to spell it...) makes for compelling viewing. Old Cadel has done it all this year. He's womn the big race, he's won over the Women's Day set courtesy of a great house and an even better wife and now he's hit it out of the ball park by adopting a starving little Ethiopian. But the big Victorian is not cut out to be a media darling and the pressure of defending the crown will be too much for him and he will blow up deluxe somwhere in the French country side and he will fade from the consciousness of the average Diurnal Australian.

4. RUGBY UNION WILL FADE BACK INTO INSIGNIFICANCE
In Twenty Eleven a local team won the Super 15 and all the Kiwi's around here kept the over-rated entity that is the World Cup in the News. This year:
- The champion Reds will start the year without their playmaker Cooper and will end it with a struggling Cooper returning from knee surgery. They will struggle.
- NSW are boring and will struggle to win a game.
- ACT are boring and will struggle to win a game.
- WA are pathetic and will be lucky to win a game other than those against equally pathetic Australian teams.
- I don't know much about Melbourne but I think I'm pretty safe in saying that they are boring.

5. GWS WILL NOT WIN AFL'S WOODEN SPOON
I'm going waaaay out on a limb here. I collected big time when the Suns won the spoon this year courtesy of a Port Adelaide win over Melbourne in the last home and away game of the year. I'll be working some spoon bets around:
- The Suns who are two key injuries away from being every bit as pathetic as GWS.
- Port Adelaide who are rubbish.
- Brisbane Lions who are rubbish.

6. MALTHOUSE AND BENNETT WILL BE PROVEN AS GENIUSES WHEN THEIR FORMER TEAMS STRUGGLE BIG TIME
Not much I can add to this heading, I think it's pretty self explanatory, but I will add one corollary. Without Bennett at the Saints, Soward will return to being an inconsistent hack and by the time State Of Origin rolls around the NSW selectors will be in disarray (again...) trying to find a 6 and 7.

7. CARTWRIGHT'S SIGNINGS AT THE TITANS WILL PROVE THAT THE ONLY POSITIONS THAT TRULY MATTER ARE 1, 6, 7 and 9
The Titans won the wooden spoon last year in a performance that would not have been out of place in the history of the Giants, Seagulls and Chargers. The shining light for fans was that they recuited heavily. They signed:
- Luke Douglas, a very good, honest prop forward.
- Nate Myles, an excellent forward who can cover every position from prop to lock.
- Jamal Idris, the jury is out on him altogether.
- Beau Champion, another centre.
Not one of these players will address the Titans issues in the 'spine', positions 1, 6, 7, 9, so they will continue to struggle big time.

8. INTERNATIONAL HORSES WILL REPEAT THE TRIFECTA IN THE MELBOURNE CUP
Save yourself the trouble of even remotely considering a local horse in next years cup and when you pick up a form guide on the Sunday after Derby Day put a line stright through them. That includes every winner of every Oaks and Derby. In the cases of Sangster and Mosheen though, I am not exactly going out on a limb.

Have a good new year!!

Taking the TRAM to Newcastle

karnage

The Tramway Stakes, run over 1400m at Warwick Farm a couple of Saturday's ago, looked a high quality affair. Stradbroke Handicap winner SINCERO held off a flying SECRET ADMIRER, herself a G1 winner at a mile, with a clear margin to THANKGODYOUREHERE in third.

2.0L away from the quinella pair was the Joe Pride trained NEESON. He led them at a good tempo and raced away from the rail up the short WF straight. He was collared at about the 200m mark and had every right to drop right out. He didn't, and held off all but the very classy trio mentioned in the opening paragraph.

He'll lead again in the Cameron Handicap this Wednesday on a track where it is generally an advantage to be up on the speed. The track is currently a Slow 6 which won't worry him in the slightest.

With SINCERO and THANKGODYOU'REHERE both nominated to run in the G1 George Main Stakes this Saturday against, among others, the Chelmsford quinella of MY KINGDOM OF FIFE and TRUSTING, it would be nice to get a lead on the form at Newcastle this Wednesday.

GROUPIES: Sydney Cup Day

Not sure what they call the two G1's in Adelaide these days... They seem to change the names for these races every year or so.

Latest results will be up soon.
