Global Warming/Climate Change aside for a moment there's a really high quality interesting Group 1 tomorrow.

I really like Bernabeu. He's on the up and can run fast time. The field he beat during the carnival wasn't great but he ran time, down the straight. He'll be under pressure from some good horses like Samaready but the 1000m straight track might be his go.

Obviously Samaready and Shamexpress are the class runners. She is the clear danger, too short for him I think. 1200m is his go.
Can't have Snitzerland. Pago Rock the roughie.

Load up Bernabeu for mine.
Don't really like anything else on the card at this juncture.

Australia in South Africa

Mr Lister

The first Test starts next Wednesday.
Are the Aussies that much of an improved team that they can challenge the Safas on home soil?

I'm not convinced. Much like the Ashes result in England glossed over some growing problems for the Poms I think this summers 5-0 whitewash is not telling the true picture.

I doubt the Safa bowling attack will let us off the hook too many times if we keep coming up with 5/130 or similar first innings scores.

Rogers and Warner need to fire.
Clarke must be dominant.
Smith must continue to improve.

The bowlers must stand up again. Johnson needs to back up his Ashes form, Harris needs to stay fit, Lyon needs to play a part too.

It's going to be interesting to see exactly where our team is at. I'm looking forward to it but under no illusions as to what may or may not happen.

We will be competitive. Good enough to win? No.

I hope I'm wrong.

James Faulkner

Mr Lister

Did anyone see what he did last night?

Astounding and not the first time he's done it.

30 to get off 3 overs and then he hits 25 off 7 balks to win the game with 3 balls to spare.

To top it off he is only 23 years old.

What a talent and seems like a very level headed young man.
After scraping into the finals last year courtesy of Essendon the Blues made it through to the second week. Was that merely a stroke of good fortune or are they good enough to improve? Malthouse wouldn't be there to build a team from the ground up so he has clearly been put in place to try and strike while they believe they can. They have also traded as though they believe they are not far off.

I'm not so convinced. Judd is getting older. Kruezer is injury prone. Have they solved their ruck issues? Is Daisy the X factor? Do they have a good enough midfield?

It took an exceptional effort from Duigan in the first final and he is no longer there. Waite is on the wrong side of 30 and fans are still waiting for him to become the player he has promised. He needs to fire consistently. Henderson needs to be the dominant defender and not a swing man.

I reckon they have over estimated where they are at and could be usurped by the likes of Richmond, North, Essendon, the Eagles and perhaps the Suns and Bulldogs.

In my opinion they are going to need absolutely everything to go right to at least maintain 9th position.
I'll get things going.

I'd like to vote for myself but that would be a bit conceited.

How about Media Central. There's a good one.

Over to the forum. Spill the beans people.

Ashes - 5th Test

Mr Lister

When the muck hits the fan what do England go and do, resort to the time honored tactic of picking non-Englishmen in their Test team. A Zimbabwean and an Irishman.

Daring selections with the three changes and as Ian Healy said pre game, they need to get excited about it and go out and have a crack.

Great to see the Aussies go in unchanged for the series. They may not be the best team we've ever seen but they are obviously a very well drilled, committed and uncomplicated bunch. Determination to succeed can count for a lot.

Probably not a terrible toss to lose but Australia have not batted well in any first innings so far this series so the Poms have their chance to get on top early and press for an elusive win.

If Australia bat the day out its goodnight England. If the Poms can knock them over today it's in their hands and there for the taking. A very fragile bunch theses Poms so let's hope the Aussies keep hammering them and they turn it up again for a 5-0 whitewash.

Should be a great game.

Murphy

Mr Lister

Just saw an interview with the young visiting Irish apprentice Oisin Murphy.(hope I got the spelling right)

What a ripper young bloke. Well spoken, knowledgeable, humble, polite.

Hope he jags a winner or two soon.

George Bailey

Mr Lister

With scores of 85, 92, 43 and 98 in consecutive one day innings is it time this cool headed leader is given his chance in the Test arena this summer against the Poms?

Or is it just a case of someone cashing in on flat one day tracks in a country that prepares pitches specifically for 50 over slogfests?

I reckon he's worth a punt. A big middle order void is evident since Husseys departure. This blokes leadership could be crucial if he can translate his 50 over form. His domestic stats from last year are a worry but they've tried some players that haven't measured up and perhaps it is his turn. Steve Smith took his chance, maybe Bailey can too. They could do a lot worse.

2013 Cox Plate

Mr Lister

Ok. With Atlantic Jewel unfortunately going amiss we now have a very interesting and open race(if it wasn't already).

PDL is going to like the sting out.
Fiorente has shown he can handle the Valley.
Happy Trails has won there too.
I reckon Long John is a better horse than Helmet. Something like Viscount. He's in it up to his ears.
Masked Marvel is in good form.
Green Moon is coming off a setback.
So is IADD.
Seville back in distance a la Saintly.
Lloyd wants this race.

Gee it's interesting.

PDL to skip clear with Long John, Masked Marvel and IADD coming.

IADD gets him in the shadows of the post.

Shamus Award late to sneak into the first 4 in a bunched finish with Long John and Masked Marvel.

Fiorente gets home well in a solid trial that primes him for the Cup.

That probably won't happen. We will know soon enough.

Good luck everyone.

Freo's near blunder.

Mr Lister

Fremantle were one point away from making a huge blunder yesterday. In resting half their team they almost gave up the opportunity to host Geelong at Subi in the first final next week. They must have been banking on the Cats giving Brissy a nice old touch up but it nearly backfired with dire consequences. If they want to play games like that then they don't get to sook about having to play at Kardinia Park next week. Based on yesterday, Geelong have some issues in defence and the ruck. Freo can beat them, but they better hope they haven't stuffed momentum by doing what they did.
