Hamer hoping for first-up success

North-west based trainer Rowan Hamer says a first starter might be his best chance of a winner at Wednesday’s Devonport meeting where he has a strong team of acceptors.

Bellacesca, a 5YO, will open her account in the Ladbrokes Owners Incentive Maiden (1009m).

"She's had a few issues obviously being a 5-year-old only having her first start but she's come along nicely this prep and she's trialled alright," Rowan Hamer said.

Bellacesca (Scissor Kick x She loves You) has trialled twice for a win on 9 May and a third placing a fortnight later.

"She's probably going to want a little further, but I think she has the ability to get the job done anyway."

Hamer also rates Captain Cam a strong chance, although the outside draw from the 1350m start will make his job somewhat tougher in the Goodstone Group Maiden.

Captain Cam has raced only once, overcoming difficulties for a fast finishing fourth on the synthetic surface on 21 May.

"He got a good check at the top of the straight the other day with a couple of tiring horses getting in the way and being his first start, he took a while to get going again.

"I've got a bit of time for him but it's not ideal going to 1350m second-up.

"It's the only Tasbred (bonus) race around so we aimed him that way and he should be thereabouts but a bad gate is not ideal so he will have to go back."

Hamer is also represented at the meeting by Lightning Hammer in race 2, Quicken Up in the sixth and last start maiden winner Lacerate in the Tasmanian Horse Transport Class 1 over 1009m

"He's always had a lot of feet issues and we gave him a good break.

"We've left him barefoot this prep and racing him in tips and he's a lot sounder and he got the job done in what was quite an ordinary race the other day but now he's sounder and happier he might be able to win a couple."

Hamer is unsure if he will run Ring Of Honour on Wednesday, he may be kept for a similar race in Hobart on Sunday.

Last season's premiership winning jockey Codi Jordan returns home from Victoria to ride at the meeting while this season's leader Brendon Mccoull will miss the meeting, he's taking a short break to re-charge but will be back riding in Hobart on Sunday.

Wednesday is the first of two midweek winter Devonport meetings with the second scheduled for 21 June.

Matt Reid will be live hosting the meeting on TasracingTV, with the first of nine scheduled for 11:15.
