CAULFIELD CUP DAY

The time honoured Caulfield Cup highlighted what is Grand Final Day at the Heath, and Without A Fight produced a stunning win, which ironically was indeed not without a fight.

The Freedman galloper had to pass a vet inspection on Friday morning before taking part in the race, and showed his class by finishing strongly over the top of West Wind Blows and ahead of last year's Melbourne Cup winner Gold Trip who finished third.

The undercard was more than handy, with Buffalo River winning the Moonga, Wrote To Arataki outlasting them in the Tristarc, Doull upsetting Spacewalk in the Caulfield Sprint, Arkansaw Kid winning the Gothic and Coeur Volante claiming the Thousand Guineas Prelude.

Spacewalk's upset defeat in the sprint was one of several examples of horses getting beaten despite trading incredibly low in play!

We will outline some of those horror stories, and the flip side with some herculean wins throughout the day.

BEST BACKED WINNERS

The Caulfield Cup had the best part of $2 million matched on it, and the top three or four in the market were all well supported.

Without A Fight was one of those in the end and was matched for a solid amount despite winning at north of $9.

They came for Buffalo River late in the Moonga, after Nunthorpe had been all the rage, with the Moroney horse (pictured) taking 55% of volume in the last 20 minutes of trading.

Most of the best backed runners got rolled, with the likes of Riff Rocket, Facile, Spacewalk and Tropical Squall all going down.

An honorable mention goes to Brave Mead in the very first who was one of only two favourites to salute. He was well supported, including by our own Bella Anderson.

FIRMERS AND DRIFTERS

The day started well for Lay Punters, especially our NSW form analyst Liam Clancey who took on the Waterhouse/Bott favourite The Three Hundred in the opening event at Randwick.

The horse drifted from $3.10 out to $4.50 and ran unplaced.

Tropical Squall will get a mention later but he was another successful drift from $1.92 out to $2.38 (although a tragic beat).

It was similar with Spacewalk who was hot favourite all day before easing from $2.72 out to $3.75. He was another sick beat but a successful drift all the same.

Viviane (pictured) also drifted in the last at Caulfield, from $2 out to $2.54 before running a tight third.

The drifts weren't always right though, with Sha Of Gomer friendless at Eagle Farm in Race 8. The runner eased from $2.92 out to $4.60 before winning anyway.

On the flip side Ramble On firmed from $3.90 into $2.46 at Kembla Grange before winning.

The King was also well backed at Kembla Grange before winning Race 7. $2.44 into $1.76.

BAD BEATS, MORE BAD BEATS AND IN-PLAY MIRACLES!

Where do we start?

It was the day for short priced runners to get rolled all across the country. That short price was before and very much during races.

But for every bad their is a good. Short priced runners losing means long odds runners winning!

Some of this action was incredible.

Perhaps it was an ominous sign that very late last night at the Melton Trots we saw Norms Lady matched for more than $1800 at $1.01 before losing.

Tropical Squall was the raging favourite and one of the best backed runners of the day at Caulfield leading into the Ethereal.

He looked home in the straight and traded as low as $1.14! But no cigar.

It got worse though…

Spacewalk traded at a staggering $1.01 in play before getting overrun by Doull in the Caulfield Sprint.

Doull was already a $16 relative roughie but traded over $300 in the run before winning.

Accelar was another $1.01 pop to go down, this time at Eagle Farm.

He had nearly $3000 matched on him at that price, whilst the winner Devine Force was matched as high as $580!

Rhesus was another who traded short in the run at Kembla Grange, hitting $1.07 before losing to Written Silk who hit $95 at the same time.

In the final event at Morphettville, Sghirripa opened at $2.20 before finding trouble and hitting $95 in the run before winning.

Madness!

To top it off, Riff Rocket was $1.34 to win the second event at Caulfield, but after being Bella Anderson's lay, he would get beaten.

PRICE ADVANTAGE

The best price advantage across the land came up nice and early at Caulfield with Sunsets (pictured) winning with a BSP of $21.98 which was 37.3% higher than the Best Tote.

Doull's blowout in the Sprint came at 23.1% higher. Buffalo River was also strong at Caulfield with a 17.7% edge.

At Randwick, in the final event Much Much Better was indeed Much Much Better. His $10.50 BSP was 28% higher than Best Tote.

King Of The Castle produced the same advantage in Race 9, whilst Dashing Legend was 17.2% in Race 6.

Kazou was also strong in Sydney, with 21.6% in Race 5.

Peace Officer also hit high with 24% in Race 3.
