Blues Team

Zappy Hero
I am a passionate New South Welshman, and i am stunned that Hayne has been left out altogether for Game 1. Sure, he's not my cuppa tea, and some of his behaviour rubs me up the wrong way. But this cannot detract from the simple fact that he is probably the best player NSW have at their disposal, and would be about the only player QLD would look to picking. I saw some of the Parra game last night (not a Parra supporter) and he was outstanding... almost won the game for them single handedly.

i think he has been excellent whenever in a sky blue jersey, and how Stuart can leave him out is unfathomable. I guess it might have something to do with the fact that the coach has a bigger ego than the players?

Fair call chaps, I read the team wrong.

Apologies :)

Tigerrish,

I'm probably going with Stuart on this one, Gasnier has played right centre all year with Nightingale outside him, on top of that Gasnier was not selected in the test side. From memory Inglis was at left centre (went off injured and was replaced by Idris), and Hodges was at right centre.

You might need to have another look at the tapes...

Its seems as though Ricky should have written down what he was going to say at the press conference last week. He really has made himself look like he hasnt really watched all the NRL matches with a wider lens than he should have.

He claims he has selected players who are specialist in their positions and wouldnt consider anyone playing out of their normal spot.

To quote Stuart......

"I think Mark Gasnier's in better form than Jamal as right centre," Stuart said.

"I could have picked Jarryd and Jamal in positions that they haven't played a lot of football in.

"I don't think that would be right in regards to the preparation for the team. I don't think it would be the right balance.

"When you're playing against a football team with the quality of the Queensland team, to put a player in a position that he is not a specialist in I think would be foolish in game one."

Ummm Ricky, Gasnier hasnt play a single game at right centre for the Dragons all year. He plays left centre with Morris beside him. The only time Gasnier played right centre was in the test match and only because Inglis was first choice at left. Wayne Bennett thinks Gasnier is a left centre, but you dont?

Gasnier has played all his football this year, besides the test, at left centre. Wayne Bennett thinks he's a left player and his combination with Morris is lethal. But here's poor Ricky stating incorrect facts to back up what would appear to be a totally clueless reason why Idris isnt playing. But he's also broken up the /Gasnier/Morris combination.......why would you do that unless you were forced to like Sheens was?

If these two were picked in their rightful positions then Idris would be playing and he would also facing off with Tonga, the bigger of the two Qld centres.

Sorry Ricky, but I'd take the ideas on player positions from someone like Wayne Bennett over you.

Umm, tigerrish, I think if you checked YOUR facts you would find not only has gasnier played right centre all year for the dragons (with Cooper on the left), but that gasnier also didnt even play in the test match you are referring to... Hodges was picked at right centre and idris ended up playing there...

Oops Tiger put his foot in it.

Actually Matt Cooper plays left centre with Morris outside him. Gasnier plays on the right side, inside Jason Nightingale.

I'm not a fan of Ricky Stuart, but his facts are right.

http://www.smh.com.au/rugby-league/league-news/badnews-stuart-after-the-hard-calls-the-hard-phone-calls-20110516-1epyv.html

WHEN NSW coach Ricky Stuart phoned the star players who missed out on selection for Origin I he had little choice but to be honest and up front with them about the reasons for their omissions.

Under the new Blues structure, Stuart is not only coach but the sole NSW selector.

He could not use the age-old gambit when he spoke to Robbie Farah, Tom Learoyd-Lahrs, Luke Lewis and Jarrod Mullen about wanting them in the side but the selectors preferring someone else.

Doesnt matter who the blues pick - people always have a whinge.

People were whinging about Soward last year and when they picked Idris they whinged about that and now they whinge when he doesnt get picked.

Is Hayne really that important? Tim Brasher and ET did more at origin level than he has and both of them could tackle.

Its good when fullbacks chime in and score tries but their main job is returning or defusing kicks and defence. Hayne is often caught out of position in defence and when attacking kicks get put thru.

"Rising star Dugan, 21, will make his Origin debut, with Stuart and co-selector Bob Fulton refusing to consider playing anyone even slightly out of position."

Just type "Jason King Bob Fulton" into google. Enough said really.

Fair enough Insom. I accept your point.

I think his positional play has improved as well but it needed to.

"Idris? LOL. He has absolutely no idea in defense and should not be considered for rep football on that basis alone. The biggest myth in the game at the moment."

Insom,
In the first three rounds of this season Idris had racked up 7 ineffective tackles and 10 missed tackles. They are bad numbers however you want to look at them. But in his last six games he has been considerably better – only 2 ineffective tackles and 10 missed tackles. His defence is improving all the time. He missed one tackle against the Dragons on the weekend and one tackle against the Broncos in the game prior to that.

But now for the other side of the coin – Michael Jennings is the man keeping him out of the centres for NSW. In his last six games he’s had 5 ineffective tackles and missed 12. And I’m not just cherry-picking figures to suit my argument here – Jennings missed 7 tackles in round one.

cheers

Some interesting stats. Of course they don't tell the full story but it shows Tolman is a good bet if you want your props going forward.

Fulton? Obviously Stuart consulted with him but this side is Stuart's, noone elses. He has said as much, as has Gould.

"Fulton? Obviously Stuart consulted with him but this side is Stuart's, noone elses. He has said as much, as has Gould."

King's there because of Fulton. Blind Freddy can see that one mate.

Oh dear,

It's that time of year again-
hype, cliches, BS, hype.

where's the mute button.

NSW never seem to get this right.

Hayne has always stepped up for NSW - he's played on the wing previously and been close to best on ground when he has.

As for the specialist argument...maybe for some roles, but I'm quite happy to have Darius Boyd playing on a wing for us.

Idris and Hayne need to be picked and you need to stick with them...and I know Learoyd-Lahrs is going like a busted with the Raiders but I would have stuck with him as well.

Closer...but no cigar

6-0

Dugan is a promising player but playing in a very disappointing and underperforming team is a worry for mine (particularly on debut)
Hayne should have still been picked. He hasn't done alot wrong to not be picked.
He has stood out for NSW over the past 3 series, despite some average club form in patches. And Hayne can easily chime in and double as a five-eighth if things at 6 & 7 aren't working. 1st timer Dugan cannot do this. I think this is a big mistake from the Blues and Sticky Ricky. How in God's name are they going to win this series?
I am worried.

BB

1. Josh Dugan- agree, better defence than Hayne and was MOTM in NRL allstars.

2. Brett Morris - terrible last year but Gordon injured so not much choice.

3. Mark Gasnier - deserved a recall and played well before.

4. Michael Jennings - soft defence like Idris but specialist left centre and quicker. Fair enough.

5. Akuila Uate - had to pick him

6. Jamie Soward - great kicking game, soft in defence but the back row should protect him and Bird provides another kicking option.

7. Mitchell Pearce - fair enough, works better with Carney though. Shame he can't behave himself.

8. Jason King - wtf? mobile for a prop but not the best.

9. Michael Ennis - tough enough but stupid. Cost NSW g3 last year so he owes us one.

10. Kade Snowden - fair enough

11. Beau Scott - good defender there to help soward

12. Greg Bird motm twice at origin. mixes nrl form but big match player and takes the pressure off soward. good choice.

13. Paul Gallen © good choice as captain

14. Ben Creagh - looks good in nrl but soft as in origin - time to man up

15. Trent Merrin - who? must be related to Peter Taylor

16. Tim Mannah - mobile solid prop. ok

17. Dean Young - tough enough but Hayne or Carney would have added a lot more spark off the bench.

The key players are Bird, Soward and Ennis.

If they can service the quick backs with good passes then they can cause plenty of trouble.

Best decisions - not picking Gidley and Idris.
Worst - King and not picking Carney.

Carney's combo with Pearce would have been handy around half time or near ft.

Dugan is a good choice. Hayne's defence is weak but would have benched him.

Idris is a big cat - bombed a try in the Aust game by not passing to Slater and is too slow for an origin centre. He's more of a fwd than a centre.

Stuart is right to pick "his team" whatever it is because he gets the blame if they lose.

We were always on the backfoot the moment they named Stuart as a full time coach. What should a team facing a 6th straight series loss look for then, a winner?

He has been punted or jumped from his last 3 jobs.

His claim to fame is a 2002 Roosters Premiership with a side and structure that was inherited from Graham Murray. Only took him a couple of years to stuff it though.

I cannot fathom how Aiden Tolman was not the first player picked, he is killing them. Workrate is superb.

It's ok though I'm sure Ricky already has his list made up of who to blame:

1. Referees
2. Linesman
3. Media
4. Injuries
5. Anybody but me
etc...

Ricky himself had a very good long kicking game and used it to good effect in origin.

I reckon he's picked Soward on the basis of using a similar style of play.

If the NSW fwds are not going great or are tired Soward can get them out of trouble and the quick backs can try to neutralise the run backs from Slater and co. Of course it wont help if Jennings runs down and misses tackles but Idris is too slow to get into position.

So I can understand those selections but King ahead of TLL and co?

TLL was the best prop last year for the blues off the bench and gets dropped while King hardly did much.

Maybe Ricky picked King because he considers him more mobile and better defensively?

Otherwise I'm not sure because TLL has stronger hit ups.

Mannah is fairly mobile for a prop too so their only big and slow prop is Snowden.

"Idris and Hayne need to be picked and you need to stick with them"

Idris? LOL. He has absolutely no idea in defense and should not be considered for rep football on that basis alone. The biggest myth in the game at the moment.

"I cannot fathom how Aiden Tolman was not the first player picked, he is killing them. Workrate is superb."

Can you fathom how Bailey didn't get picked because his work rate is better. I'm not buying this Tolman hype. He is a little on the small side and makes his contribution via the stats rather than through impact. Of course he should be getting a run ahead of King but Fulton can't help himself when it comes to Manly players.

"tough enough but Hayne or Carney would have added a lot more spark off the bench."

Don't put backs on the bench. Where are you going to play these guuys?

"Hayne can easily chime in and double as a five-eighth if things at 6 & 7 aren't working. 1st timer Dugan cannot do this."

Simply not true. I would have picked Hayne given his SOO performances but Dugan can chime in as an additional ball player. He did it for most of the second half against Melbourne this weekend.

Insom,

You make some valid points.

But...

if you are suggesting Dugan is going to take the ball on his Origin debut and play like an extra 6 or 7, you are a peanut.
That is why they should have picked Hayne.

The fact he has retired from rep football is one !!!!!!!

Dugan while being an above average player is not fit to lick Jarrods bum crack at this stage of his career, what do the NSWRL and ARL want Jarrod to go play union?

I guess we will find out shortly whether the right reins have been pulled... Stuart will either be hailed a genius or a fool... but seriously, it smacks of personal dislike for Hayne and coaches need to be able to rise above this, especially when they are staring down the barrel of a 6th straight series loss.

Hayne, Tolman and Farah probably would all make my side with Idris and Mullen also unlucky. I have watched Jamie Soward absolutely brain club footy.... Will he do it in Origin? As we've seen, Ben Creagh is a great club player, but christ.... MIA when it comes to origin. The talk of "Origin Players" is also amusing from Stuart, Daley, Bozo et al.... Whats hayne? Only best and fairest for the blues last two series, as voted by the players and coaches.....

If we win next week, I will apologize profusely- but crikey...

Mole,

I said he can't defend not he just simply can't tackle. He has no idea about positional play in the centers. You need to be in the right position to attempt a tackle in the first place. But I'll say it now, he can't tackle either. Add to that he would be out of position playing on the other side of the field. No thankyou.

I agree Jennings has been ordinary. Ricky wanted Cooper to make a comeback but he turned him down. In Jennings defense he has been playing at a club that doesn't give a @#$% and can lift far beyond that level whilst that is the best Idris can muster.

BB,

No. I'm suggesting that Dugan is a modern day fullback and has some ball playing ability. From the explanation he gave Ricky did not wan't a secondary 6 messing up the structure. Which Hayne has been at Parramatta this season given the ineffectiveness of the halves.

SK,

Ricky's got a phone.

I think the appointment of R. Stuart as coach, the man who lost the World Cup on home soil, was the first mistake. But I'd love to be proved wrong....

I'm not a St George fan, but they definitely deserve to have several players in the NSW team (I might disagree with two of them though). They have been the standout NRL team for the last two years and they show a SOO type attitude every week.

I am amazed though that there was no place in the 17 for Hayne, Idris, Lewis and Tolman.

Idris was only in the Australian team the other week because the test was played on the goldcoast and he had just signed there, the make up the aussie test team largely depends on where the game is played these days sydneyites don't turn up so we have a situation where we only have a couple of players from NSW in the side. When is the NRL going to just have a courier mail readers poll select the australian side and be done with it.

Queensland will be shaking in their boots with belly laughter rippling all the way down. What a feckless selection.

Stuart may have been handed a poisoned chalice but let's be clear, the contents are all of his own making. No Hayne may be the most glaring selection error, but where the heck is utility Luke Lewis? Snowden, Ennis, King - it's obvious Sticky isn't much good at darts. For the sake of the series let's hope they play out of their skins because if some of these guys reproduce their club form the Cockroaches won't be competitive.

Getting his team to gel and play for each other will be task number one for Stuart. Stemming the flow of blood after the first game loss will probably be problem no2. Overconfidence in the Toad camp is his only chance.

Zappy,

I think you hit on something regarding the coaches ego, his press conference smacked of that and his reasons for not selecting certain players were borderline laughable.

"I want players who are specialist in their positions"

So he not only leaves out Idris, a starting test centre last week because Gasnier plays the same position, he doesn even give him a spot on the bench. This is a 100kg plus centre who can play in the back row.

He spends a couple of minutes rapping Hayne and his brilliance, he even said after watching him yesterday that he plays his position like an extra 5/8. But he cant fit a player like that in, not only the run on side, but he cant fit him on the bench.

Farrar and Watmough, both in the original test squad, they miss out as well. Had Hayne not been suspended, he might well have played in the test match too. So we have 4 players deemed good enough to be in the top 20 as far as internationals go, but they arent in the top 17 for their own state?

That would make sense if NSW were the dominant SOO team over the past few season. But they arent, they havent even been close. And picking almost the entire Dragons team is not going to win you a SOO series. Stuart even went to great lengths to point out that SOO football was totally different to club footy, so why does he think pick St George team as his squad is going to win him anything?

But the most laughable comment Stuart made was when he said "We didnt select a team to play like Qld, we want a team to play like NSW"

Hello Ricky, thats what you've been doing the last few years and it aint working. When in Rome, do as the Romans, in this case, do as Qld do.

Thank god I dont support NSW, but I would like to see them actually look like having a chance. But you leave out players who might actually stick it to Qld at certain times during a game isnt helping your cause.
