Things I've seen

imaj eel

I've been here a fair while, more than 70 years in fact, and in that time I've been to race meetings all across Australia and New Zealand.

I was leaning on the fence when Cardigan Bay started from 78 yards and won the 1963 Auckland cup, I was lucky enough to be a members guest at Gloucester Park when Mt Eden butchered the start and gave them "officially" 80 yards start, seemed more like 120 to those that were there, and still brained 'em.

Live, or thru the magic of TV, I have been lucky enough to see Vain break their hearts in a disdainful performance in his slipper win and I recall fondly the way So You Think put them away in his second Cox Plate, and Winx in her second. I thought that Placid Ark was a bully of the highest order with both his Flemington Autumn runs in the '87 season.

There was the dominance of Might and Power in his C'field cup win and the '66 Melbourne cup of Gallilee, all of these falling into what I consider to be "smack their bums, and put them in their place" kind of runs.

I saw either live or on TV or both, in some cases horses the likes of Kingston Town, Octagonal, Sunline, Northerly, Maykibe Diva, the pacers Christian Cullen and Blacks a Fake and many many others who have or who should have been labelled champions, including the unforgettable Black Caviar, BUT NEVER have I witnessed a horse of any age or gender, win with the ease and authority that WINX did in the Ryder Stakes on Saturday, the 18th March 2017.

Not saying others have not done as good, or better, some thru courage and toughness, some through longevity {Manikato}, for whatever reason floats your boat, but I personally put this race down as the best performance I have ever witnessed on an Australian racetrack.

If something gets your juices flowing and you feel it ranks better, let me know. I wont argue, I'll just enjoy the memories with you.

I'm old enough to have seen Cardigan Bay win an Auckland cup from 72 behind, I saw Vain brain em in a golden slipper, I took a day off work when we won the Americas cup. Through the wonders of TV I have seen great sporting events, and sports people all over the world, but I {personally} have never seen a better sporting performance than the demolition of Floyd Patterson by the great one Muhammed Ali {Cassius Clay}.

The life of this man was one to remember for all peoples, for a long time, if not for all time.

A most complete athlete, a witty and erudite person, a man who overcame the odds and obstacles that life threw at him, beginning with his birth colour and never getting much easier, he managed to romp through life with a sense of humour, humanity and regard for others, except maybe for Sonny Liston.

His leaving us has filled me with a sense of loss, and the feeling that I don't have enough years left to again see an athlete or sports person with his talent and complete mastery of his chosen field.

Sadly, I must say VALE Muhammad, Farewell Cassius, it was a pleasure to have experienced you.

Form guide

Can anybody help with an explanation please??
In the detailed form guide of most horses there all sorts of abbreviations, most of which I have found an explanation for, but I'm lost for what OHR and then a number means. The entry comes after the trainers name, and it has me baffled. Any body know??

It is this sites form details that I'm talking of. Thank you

The Makybe Diva,

# 1 Green Moon has won The Blamey stks Turnbull stks, and Mel cup.

#2 Fawkner won Caulfield cup and placed in Gr1 WFA

#3 Boban won Epsom and Emirates h'caps and Chipping Norton at WFA

#4 Super cool Won the Australia cup and placed in the Memsie and C'field stakes.

#5 Sertorius yet to win at G1 but has placed, and has won Gr2

#6 the first pretender, a European of unproven group talent, will probably win now he's been knocked

#7 G 2 winner only

#8 Euro gr placegetter and local G3 winner

#9 Won Memsie stks R'wick guineas and placed Australia guineas as well as won also at gr 2 level

#s 10 &11 both eligible for m'week rest grade

Summary,, this race has among its starters the winner of the Mel cup, C'field cup, Aust Cup, , Epsom h'cap Emirates h'cap, several other WFA races as well as 3yo classics. We are only into the 3rd week of our spring racing, and we can expect better later.

Inlight of the above,I am surprised at some of the negativity I have read on here today about this race.. It is a well rounded and represented Gr1 with more than 1/2 the field having strong g1 form and most of the rest having either G1 placings or G2 wins, and if that doesn't make a Gr 1 race, then please post on here and enlighten me

Allowing that the coach is the head of any sporting team, I would like to warn any of you out there, that may be contemplating the Roosters as premiership material, without an adequate head you will not win,and the roosters are lacking in that area.

Doubt it ????..... Then read on

Direct from Wikipedia I give you the following

Brian Smith coached teams since he started coaching with Illawarra in 1984 have made 4 grand finals and won none..... they have made it to 6 separate finals series and not made it to the grand final and that is his Australian history. English records are worse in %age terms because he missed out there in both '88 and '89.

Brian is famously quoted as telling the Parra team of 2001, that we prepare as for any other game ,,"this is just another game, dont get carried away by the day, we will prepare as usual",, this is the comments made before the biggest day of these young mens lives, a day that surely is not just another game/day. Kids who have had a drean of this day since the under 7s?? if you are not going to get your team "up" for a day like this , when will you get them up..

So Roosters supporters, if you think your team are a hope just because they are currently 3rd and firing,, remember your coaches history, and the history of teams that have failed under his guidance

Parramatta 1998 and 2002

Cox Plate ,,he left out Who begot you,, the obvious choice we all thought, and won with the roughie.

Guineas to day,,, he left out Whobegot you and will run with the roughie,,, repetitive history, or just the way things worked out??
