I really rate this mare and think she can graduate to WFA company this Spring, while maybe picking up a race like the Toorak on the way.

1400 metres tomorrow is a small query given she's never ran below a mile but she has a terrific fresh record so I still think she'll be too good for them.

Then again I've been wrong many times before.

Are there any other horses people can see making the step up to WFA this Spring? Any hidden gems out there?

Cheers

Victoria Derby

Balciano

Doesn't look a strong 3 Yr old male staying crop this Spring, the Norman Robinson was dominated by the fillies and the Geelong Classic looked to be only average. Preferment took forever to wind up. Perhaps he'll be better at Flemington.

I'm hoping the Vase on Saturday produces a horse to emerge, and I think that horse is Atmosphere. Can still get $11/3.50 for the Derby, I think that will shorten after the weekend.

My only concern is that the UCI Stakes form didn't really hold up with War Point/Magicool in the Norman Robinson. But I'm prepared to give him the benefit of the doubt. And if anyone deserves a bit of luck this Spring its Trent Busuttin.

What does everyone like at this stage?

Spring Champion Stakes

Balciano

Just wondering why this was moved to the week after Epsom Day a year or 2 back.

With the Norman Robinson/Caulfield Classic now worth $750K surely running the race on Epsom Day would be the ideal scenario - not only would the 2 week lead into the Caulfield Classic then 2 week break to the Derby be suitable, it would also strengthen Sydney's biggest meeting of the Spring.

Instead we now have 3 Group 1's for 3 Yr olds within the space of an hr or 2
on the same afternoon.

Thoughts?

Miracle Mile

Balciano

Not everyone's a fan I know but with the big racing over, thought it worth mentioning.

Really good field this season, with tremendous depth. To put it into i perspective, last seasons winner Baby Bling started at $40 in the last of the qualifying races Sat night. The winner of that race, Smoken Up broke 1 minute 50 for the mile to earn yet another start in the race as an 11 year old.

Barrier draw below.

Smoken Up
For A Reason
Mach Beauty
Abettorpunt (E1)
Beautide
Christen Me
Terror To Love
Im Victorious
Bitobliss (E2)
Restrepo

Spring Stars

Balciano

Well I didn't do too well in picking the horses that would emerge at this years Spring Carnival (Drago anyone?) but as happens every year some new stars have appeared, while other established horses have moved to the next level.

Apart from the up and comers like Boban and Zoustar who burst onto the scene, it was great to see horses like Red Tracer and Buffering take the next step. Red Tracer has gone from a bonny mare who was outstanding on wet tracks to a horse of the highest class in all conditions, while Buffering took advantage of no Black Caviar and no Hay List, and got some richly deserved Group 1's.

Fiorente looks like he could win anything he contests next Autumn - every start down under has been a cracker, and it could be argued he should have won either the Turnbull or Cox Plate leading up to his Cup win. Or both. He could have some great clashes with Its a Dundeel in Sydney. Likewise Guelph looks like she has the world at her feet.

There's always downsides to every Spring, the loss of Atlantic Jewel to racing a standout, and some tragedies involving both horse and humans. But all in all another terrific carnival.

Who was everyone's star performers this Spring?

With Atlantic Jewel set to run against the Mares at WFA this weekend, and given she would have been long odds on had she lined up against the boys in the Feehan, what odds is she likely to open up at?

Meeting mares on a level playing field, the scenario is similar to if Makybe Diva bypassed the '05 Cup and ran in the Matriach on the last day of the carnival at level weights instead, or if Sunline ran in the race named after her against the mares also over the mile at the Valley. Or Black Caviar coming over to Adelaide for the Sangster for that matter.

Surely she'd have to be the shortest price feature race favourite in living memory, even eclipsing some of BC's starting prices??

Father and Son

Balciano

With Gary Ablett Jnr's amazing form lately, it had me thinking of famous father/son combinations, not just in AFL but in sport in general, and who was better.

Who would you choose? Apologies if the peaks I've chosen aren't spot on..

Gary Ablett junior circa 2010, v Gary Ablett Jnr circa 1989 Finals series

Tony Mundine circa 1974 v Anthony Mundine circa 2009, Super Middleweight 12 rounds.

Lohnro 4 Yr Old Autumn v Octagonal 3 Yr Old Autumn, Randwick 2000 metres

Wayne Pearce circa 1985 v Mitchell Pearce 2013.(League fans feel free to correct)

Lance Cairns v Chris Cairns (I'll let the Kiwis help with their peaks.)

Billy Cook (Dex if you'd help out here..1940?) v Peter Cook early 80's.

Feel free to add any others

Cheers

Browsing on the net tonight, looking up some of our champions of yesteryear when I came across that most reputable of sites, Wikipedia. Upon reading through some of our forgotten greats pages, I was intrigued by some rather interesting updates to the page of one Kingston Town.

References to beating small Sydney WFA fields, multiple Caulfield/Melbourne Cup failures, and comment on his 'extraordinary' Timeform rating compared to Cox Plate winners who have won one of the big Cups had me suspicius, but I thought 'surely not...'

Then however came the clincher.

The only real reference to the horses 3 Cox Plates, or in fact any of his triumphs was that his 3rd Cox Plate win was famous for Bill Collins 'gaffe' that the horse couldn't win. The quote 'replays support this view in that KT was within a few lengths of the lead at the time' left me having a quiet chuckle to myself.

I then noticed the page had been updated 2 months ago.

Iggy old son, well done. But I'm almost scared to read the Lohnro page...

Doncaster/Oaks

Balciano

I know Pre-Post betting on big races is fraught with danger (see ATC Derby) but with 5 days to the Doncaster and ATC Oaks, both Shoot Out and Longport appeal as top value.

Shoot Out is showing $14.00 and $4.30, while Pierro is Even Money. So you can have a lash at the $14.00 e/w and if he runs a place, you're still getting a better return than if Pierro wins. Shoot Out loves Randwick, (George Main, Randwick Guineas, Derby, 2nd Doncaster) is only giving Pierro 1 kg and his last run in the George Ryder, beaten just on a length while looking for clear galloping room in the straight, in a sit-sprint affair was full of merit. Plus he handles all sorts of going down to a genuine Slow, and 3rd up should be primed to peak.

Longport at $9.00, beat her Oaks rivals home easily in the Storm Queen, and is another who can get through all conditions. Take out Norzita and she wins both te Fillies Group 1's in Sydney this season (Finght and Storm Queen Stakes.) She was strong to the line at Rosehill, and while Habibi's run was very good, don't forget the last 2 NZ Derby winners to race over here in the Autumn. Both Jimmy Choux and Silent Achiever won the NZ Derby and performed very well first up in Sydney in the Guineas, but then didn't back up in the Derby, and were perhaps over the top.

What do others like in the 2 features?

Horse of the Year

Balciano

Bit early perhaps but there's certainly a few genuine contenders for Horse of the Year honours this season.

Black Caviar - Lightning, William Reid, TJ Smith. Next stop: Brisbane or Adelaide?

All Too Hard - Caulfield Guineas, Orr, Futurity, 2nd Cox Plate. Next stop: All Aged Stks.

Pierro - Canterbury Stakes, George Ryder, 2nd Caulfield Guineas, 3rd Cox Plate. Next stop: Doncaster.

Its A Dundeel - Spring Champion Stakes, Randwick Guineas, Rosehill Guineas, Australian Derby. Next stop: Queen Elizabeth?

Ocean Park - Cox Plate, Caulfield Stakes, Underwood Stakes. Next stop - breeding barn.

Also some great battles for age group honours, particularly amongst the 3 Yr Olds males listed above, along with Super Cool and Fiveandahalfstar, and the 2 Yr Olds, with the Slipper Winner Overreach against the unbeaten Blue Diamond winner Miracles of Life.

Looking at the above list of contenders its certainly been a fantastic year of racing. And not an import amongst them.

Who's your pick? And what would the above HOTY contenders need to do to swing the results in their favour?

Cheers
