Victoria Derby

Balciano
Doesn't look a strong 3 Yr old male staying crop this Spring, the Norman Robinson was dominated by the fillies and the Geelong Classic looked to be only average. Preferment took forever to wind up. Perhaps he'll be better at Flemington.

I'm hoping the Vase on Saturday produces a horse to emerge, and I think that horse is Atmosphere. Can still get $11/3.50 for the Derby, I think that will shorten after the weekend.

My only concern is that the UCI Stakes form didn't really hold up with War Point/Magicool in the Norman Robinson. But I'm prepared to give him the benefit of the doubt. And if anyone deserves a bit of luck this Spring its Trent Busuttin.

What does everyone like at this stage?

Hands.
Was unusual the way he finished off. Under hard riding from before the turn, no chance 50 metres out before finding another leg.
The slight gear change might make a difference.
Has the right trainer and jockey, so improvement wouldn't surprise.

The Fav looks the goods but a bit short for me.

For the sake of having an interest in the race will be having a small wager on the Hayes runner. His old man Colin let me down a few times in the early Derby Trials. Time for atonement?

cheers,loges.

Bondieger, Cuban fighter, Verreaux (big price ran home well at Geelong)

Not the prettiest way to win a Derby but effective none the less. The price was choice on the day, no complaints here. Good to see a Zabeel back among the G1s!

The Sydney horses have it clearly

Gouldian to outstay Hampton Court with Preferment an unlucky 3rd.

Moonovermanhattan is the only local hope.

Bal,

I think (subject to Vase result) that providing Gai can keep HC "up", given a reasonable barrier, it has lengths on the rest of the field. I think we need to see HC parade before you know if he has held his condition sufficiently.

The time HC ran in the SC is far superior to anything in Melbourne.

Now to the Vase.

Frequency modulation, or was that moderation?

Syd 3yos superior this year. Havent looked at the Vase yet.

Outside the obvious who I think is a bit short now I thought SAN PADRE got going late when looking for inside runs and looked good hitting the line in the UCI. Want to see him tomorrow, likewise MOONOVERMANHATTAN as I thought his run was good in a very tough CG where, outside the quinella, they were mostly run-ons whereas he stuck on from an on-pace role.

Speaking of the Vase, DUCCIO might be something at almost dbl figs even though he's not nommed for the Derby. The Duclify form has obv been franked and he gets the services a MV specialist hoop.

Loges

We may see a revival of the Geelong Derby Trial yet - the way PREFERMENT finished off was pretty special. Would be a renaissance moment for Zabeel too, think his last G1 winner in this country may have been a while ago (Zabeelionaire?).

Anyway has form around DUCCIO who has form around the Derby fav. Certainly well found but Oli sticks.

Bondeiger ran good sectionals last start.

Why dont they have sectional times for Geelong?

Hampton Court produced easily the best distance performance so far this season. Made two decent horses look second rate over the final furlong of the Champion Stakes. Deserved favourite but when these juveniles get out to 2500m the first time anything can happen so I'm not interested in the short price currently on offer. If it stays there I'll look on or just use it as a multiplier assuming nothing emerges in the next week and a half.
