Sorry to have taken so long, been a bit busy at work.

My loss on the Cup comp was $42,400. Nothing compared to what I would have lost if Efficent had started-he would have cost me $226,000. His unfortunate demise cost Fat Back Pocket plenty though as he took him 100 times, bad luck mate.

On average it was a 50% strike rate--maybe something to help with next years betting.

Thanks everyone who took part. It was good to see how the figures worked out. Clearly this is not what he used, I feel now it must have been 20/1 about a placegetter not a starter, so if I am around next year I will run a comp along those lines.

P.S. Ended up using a $20 payout not 20/1-sorry to rip the winners off, but 1/2 way through working it all out realised that was what I was doing & was too lazy to redo it.

Betting in running

Just watched the video & betting on last years Cup on Betfair. Anyone who hasnt seen it jump on & have a look, it's fantastic viewing- Efficent $20+ into unbackable fav as he powers home.

Has anyone had a bet in running? I'm gearing up to have a splash on the cricket test starting in a coupla days.

Melbourne Cup runner comp

Reading the current MC thread got me thinking of an old friend who allways claimed he made good money for over 30 years offering everyone 20/1 about them picking a Melbourne Cup starter before weights were released. I fairly sure this is what he did(cant check with him as he has passed away) so I thought I would trail it on forumites.

Here is the comp.

Pick any horse you like (more than 1 if you want & I will set you for $2000 to $100 (only in cyberdollars) about that horse running in this years MC.

Has to start-emergencies & scratching @ the barriers dont win.

I will close betting when weights are issued. This is the 1 point I am not clear on, when he stopped taking bets so will try it this way & see what happens.

So hopefully we have plenty of punters prepared to have a shot & I will declare the winners & my profit/loss (hopefully the former) after the 2008 Cup has been run & won.

Gee I wish some of the other NRL players with over inflated egos would take a leaf out of this champions book.

Has earnt plenty playing League & Union, however the money has never been the B all & end all.Brad has done what he tought was best for his career & how good has he been!

2 stints in league for a return of:

4 premierships.
11 SoO apperances.
3 Tests + 5 Super League internationals.

2 stints in union for these rewards:

14 tests for the All Blacks so far.
1 Super 14 title.

Fantastic effort over 14 years at the highest level of both codes.

Collingwood & Hawthorn seem to me to be overs this coming weekend,between $2.05 to $2.20 for either team @ the different outlets.

Both teams coming off good wins last week,I would have thought that despite playing away, bookies would have been betting $1.85 about each of them & their opponents.

3rd SOO predictions

Two days & we have SOO 3,with the fine weather for the next few days(as they say QLD=beautiful 1 day perfect the next) I expect a higher scoring match. Also the inclusion of 1 M Bowen suggests Big Mal & super assistant Mr N Henry are going to have their troops attack more.

QLD for a Maroonwash 29-14.
