I didn't actually have a bet in the race so this may seem a bit over the top but I was amazed at Nikolic’s ride on Zapurple on Saturday. I would have been pretty filthy if I did have money on it but looking at the Stewards report this is all that came out of it??

"When questioned concerning why he circled the field on Zapurple after missing the start badly, D Nikolic stated that he was under instructions from trainer Mr J Conlan that, as the filly is a strong stayer and its chances diminished if ridden from the back of the field, that if the pace steadied he was to make ground around the field and sit outside the leader. D Nikolic agreed that, in retrospect, he had erred in adopting that tactic and was advised that, as a senior rider, he is expected to exercise a greater degree of judgment in respect of the tactics he adopts.”

I know there are a few current and ex trainers/jockey’s on this forum so I’d be interested in their views on the ride and resulting penalty (or lack there of). Seems to have gotten away fairly lightly in my opinion. If I stuff up in my job I definitely get more than a “as a senior employee you’re expected to exercise a greater degree of judgment”??
Anyone else familiar with QLD’s online section in the Courier Mail called “Photo finishes: How did your fancy go?”. I thought it was a great service as I don’t often get a chance to see the races live. This little gem of a service provided the Saturday photo results with the field at the turn and then at the finish.

I would view it religiously every Sunday morning to check my results and also find future winners by trying to find the good runs of the day or horses not suited by the conditions (ie bad barrier, wide runs, pattern/bias for the day). I was lost on Sunday when I couldn’t find it on the Courier Mail site so I contacted them today.

I got a response from John Grey, Editor of the Courier Mail who informed me that “The process of producing the race finishes is very time-consuming and we have found there is insufficient demand to warrant the cost of producing them”.

I told him of my disappointment and requested that they reconsider their decision. Mr Grey’s response (to which I am very thankful) was …. “If we are overwhelmed with responses, I will reconsider the decision”

So if anyone else has previously used this service (or thinks it would be of benefit to them in the future) I’d recommend you email John and let him know ...

For those not familiar with the service check out the following link to find out what is now missing. This was the service for 26 April Eagle Farm meeting.

Not sure which way this thread is going to go but I was wondering if people had "one" particular rule they'd care to share from their punting experiences that usually saves them money because they stick to it instead of listening to that inner beast. A rule that prevents you from even betting in the race.

I have quite a few but one that has saved me quite a bit recently is;

The Princess Rule - "Hot Weather Policy" - Never bet on races where the temperature for that location is predicted to be over 33 degrees.

Love to hear a few others ....
What a money spinner this race has proven to be over the last two months. I’d be interested to hear about what others consider to be the best “form race” of the spring thus far.

My Nomination - The D'urban Quality Stakes - run at Caulfield over 1700m on the first day of spring. Just one week after EI reared its ugly head and the threat of the entire racing industry grinding to a complete halt was very real. A head bobbing finish between the first four and a few others not far behind them with some hard luck stories clearly documented in the Stewards report. A race time of 1.42.19 which was only 0.77 outside the track record?? No other times for that day compared to this race and incidentally few have compared in all races so far during the carnival – I’d personally let the Flemington track off the hook at this stage.

The unfortunate Ice Chariot got the money followed by The Fuzz, Cefalu, Red Lord, Zavite, Dolphin Jo and Rubiscent (which got a big mention in the Stewards Report and came out to win the Underwood at $50/1 next start). They’ve all done quite nicely since this race and I think it could have made for an interesting Caulfield Cup had Ice Chariot remained sound – but that’s racing.

Any thoughts or challengers for “form race” thus far? Sometimes the answers to the future are hidden in the past ………..
