AIDAN O'Brien, who left Flemington beaten and belittled three years ago, has vowed to return this spring.
There appears some confidence in England and Ireland that the on-going quarantine stalemate will be resolved within days, encouraging O'Brien to pencil in Melbourne.
And while So You Think is unlikely - but not ruled out - to return for a third Cox Plate bid, O'Brien has the Cox Plate as well as the big Cups on his agenda.
Racing Victoria's international consultant, Leigh Jordon, visited O'Brien on Tuesday and the Irishman spoke enthusiastically about a spring assault.
A triumphant return to Melbourne would be a dramatic contrast to the famed trainer's last visit.
In 2008 the three O'Brien runners ran themselves ragged in the Melbourne Cup, prompting a terse please explain from chief steward Terry Bailey, who queried jockey Wayne Lordan's tearaway tactics on Alessandro Volta.
O'Brien and Lordan were cleared of breaching rule 135b, which deals with allowing a horse to finish in the best possible position. O'Brien's other runners, Septimus and Honolulu, pulled up lame.
O'Brien has not been back. "I've tried to entice Aidan back every year since and you could always tell that it wasn't going to happen," Jordon said. "But this time he seems really keen. He said that if the quarantine issue could be sorted out, he'd come."
Jordon said a So You Think return was not as remote as many believed.
"The vibe I'm getting from Aidan is that it's a genuine option," he said.
"A horse like Cape Blanco would be more likely, first for the Cox Plate then the Melbourne Cup."
Cape Blanco won the Man O' War Stakes at Belmont, New York, last weekend.
Jordon said there had been a miscommunication about steps that had to be taken at Newmarket to facilitate the Cups raiders.
He said a paddock at a stud farm near Newmarket, and not racing stables, might have to be cleared so non-travelling stock could be a mandatory 100m from Cups raiders.
"And I've spoken to the stud about maybe moving some broodmares and they seemed happy to oblige."

Gai Waterhouse expects Rock Kingdom to step up and prove her assertion he is the leading three-year-old in Australasia when he takes on Metal Bender in the Rosehill Guineas, round two of the three-year-old triple crown.
Metal Bender claimed first blood in the Randwick Guineas (1600m) on March 14 aided by a ground-saving ride from Danny Nikolic along the inside when others were steering wide.
While Waterhouse is more than confident Rock Kingdom can turn the tables on Saturday, the Metal Bender camp is also certain the 2000 metres will suit their three-year-old.
"He will be even better over more ground heading to the Derby," Allan Denham said on behalf of his trainer father Jack after the Guineas.
That is also Waterhouse's belief regarding Rock Kingdom.
"He is bred to do it," she said.
"He is the most impressive three-year-old in Australasia and is my Derby horse.
"The Rosehill Guineas will prove that."

Who's in your first 4?
I haven't really made any predictions on horses on this website and am pretty terrible at it to be honest but I think All American is good odds for the Ascot Vale at 21. He hasn't done much wrong this campaign, being knocked out of it first up in the Golden Rose when a good fourth, before running on well against the older horses in the Manikato. Next start he raced near the lead with a fast pace and ran second behind Whobegotyou before not quite handling the mile last start when not beaten far. Is a top class horse who just needs to turn his luck around and while it is hard to see if he can beat the Sydney boom horse he is good eachway value..
So this is the field apparantly on TAB. Who wins and any first 4 tips?

Does anyone know the reason behind his terrible form this campaign? Was it the virus the caused him to be scratched at Moonee Valley last friday night? I know he prefers heaps of racing but he has been terrible this campaign. Do you know anything about the situation New Zealanders?

In the Liston I wouldn't be surprised if a fit horse like Jungle Ruler gets up. Is good at the track/distance and if he gets a soft pace he may prove hard to run down. It a mouthwatering race but at the current time I'd tip Weekend Hussler over Light Fantastic and Dealer Principal.
